When Using Craigslist Make Sure You Really Want the Product or Service

Danny Crum
Have you ever used Craigslist to buy something? It's an amazingly simple website concept that connects thousands of people each day. If you are looking for a product or service Craigslist allows you to communicate with the person via email to work out the details before you actually meet in person to settle the transaction. You can have them send more detailed descriptions or more pictures, or even give them a call to talk about the product or service. So, why would I warn you about making sure you really want a product or service before you visit the seller house? Let me explain.

Recently, my wife and I found a toddler bed and mattress on Craigslist that caught our interest. The description of the product seemed interesting so we sent the seller an email. She was happy that we were interested and invited us to come to her home to view the bed. We found a time that would work for both of us and arranged a visit.

When we arrived at her apartment and opened the door we were greeted by a lady and the strong scent of smoke. We were led to the back bedroom to view the toddler bed. The bed wasn't in great shape and there was no way we wanted to use the mattress since it reeked of smoke. No problem just walk away, right?

It wasn't that easy. The lady went into this story about how her daughter had grown out of her bed and needed a bigger bed. She really couldn't afford to buy her a new one until she sold this one. She was even willing to throw in the egg crate, foam mattress cover which made the mattress "super soft". My wife and I both felt horrible after hearing her story and seeing the rest of her apartment. We did not purchase the bed, but you can imagine our situation.

So, before you actually make the visit to someone's house to look at something make sure you get all the information. If we had asked the right questions or for better pictures we would have known it was a product we didn't want. We would have saved ourselves a trip and some grief.
