When Valentine's Day Has Nothing to Do with Romance

Taylor Ramage
As a perpetually single young woman, I never have anything interesting to do on Valentine's Day besides sit in my room and feel lonely, but on the first Valentine's Day of my college career, my friend and I decided to do something fun. We went outside and played a game I'm going to arbitrarily call "Follow the Stick." We found a stick, marked one end of it as the pointer, and threw it up in the air. Whichever way the pointer pointed, we walked until we came across another area with multiple directions to go in.

This route took us all around campus and through the woods. We made it an extra fun adventure by taking lots of pictures of the funny things we found. The uncovered treasure included golf balls, a Chinese tissue packet, strange looking trees, goose footprints on the baseball field, a book, a jockstrap hidden inside the bricks in the dugout, a six foot long Batman party tarp, and a thong in the parking lot.

It took us about an hour to wander around campus in that manner. It was a little cold, but it was incredibly fun and it was much better than having nothing else to do and being distracted by the fact that we didn't even have dates. Afterward, we ate chocolate covered strawberries and they were delicious.

Valentine's Day doesn't necessarily have to be about romance. You can do something completely ridiculous with your friends or find something fun to do on your own. As hard as it might be, feeling sorry for yourself won't do much for you.
