When was the Last Time You Smiled?

The Distance a Smile Will Travel

Catdog
Everyone knows that I love to sit back and watch a good show
Especially all around, watching loved ones learn as they grow
Daily I walk through this park, homeless souls, tears build up all around
Three months ago, these same ones, not looking up, only at the ground
Wondering, I know, where in life they had went all so wrong
How they did end up here, now weak when once so strong
Now each day, I walk passed, voice my regards on the summer to come
Each of them know me, my "hello's," and a smile runs out in freedom

Every day the same ones sit on the benches and await my passing
No one asks anything of me unless a smile I appear to be missing
I will never give or take from them, either would be a horrid curse
They are confident; equal I treat them, neither better nor worse
Passing the elderly man that has recently joined my group of friends
As to why I treat them with fairness when most are full of self defends
Excuses for stereotyping each and every poor soul who is homeless
Ruined reputations because of a few, making most really hopeless

All my life I've stressed the best things in life are always free
For them, their day shines bright when a smile they do see
If in giving, you enable someone to do wrong or to expect more
Then contributing to a real problem, helping society's real war
I do not give pity, nor hand out sympathy
Not far from them; I am and daily I do see
That no matter what life brings me, I am alive
Doing everything I can to make it by, survive
Just like the homeless elder man I see every morning
I know that I am not so different, and do not need warning
To know I could wake up tomorrow and be in his shoes
All it would take is one financial straw, making issues
To send me over the edge, and homeless I'd fall
But for now, each day, I do all I can to stand tall
I am no better than any of them I see in that park
Therefore, what good am I if at them I do bark?
Who would've ever thought I would build a reputation
As "the woman who smiles and says hi" without hesitation
And my popularity does grow amongst them, days turn into weeks gone by
And I learned, a smile can make anyone's day brighter. Go on & give it a try!

I am sure that running into you - especially on a less-than-ideal day, would be a real boost! When you're smiling, the whole world might not smile with you but it DOES bring at least a tad of sunshine into whatever room you are in. On the other hand, a smile that never fades is apt to be seen as being somehow fake. N'est pas?
