When Should I Wear My Glasses?

This Depends on Age, Activities and Common Sense

S. A. Knight
In general, children under the age of 9 years should wear their glasses all the time because from birth to age 9 the eyes are developing and good vision is important to proper development. Poor vision, which results from failure to correct vision in young children, is called Amblyopia and may not be correctable after age 9. Children who have headaches or difficulty concentrating in school should always wear their glasses while reading or in school. If the glasses solve the problem, then common sense dictates that you should wear your glasses to solve the problem if solving the problem is important to you.

There are requirements for driving a car in order to be licensed and there are some jobs which require a certain level of vision. It always makes me wonder why these people ask if they need to wear their glasses because the answer is so obvious.

Often I get students or nurses or technicians who tell me they can't see their screens or monitors clearly. I ask them can they see when they put their glasses on and they answers yes. I say what appears obvious to me and that is "put your glasses on when performing those tasks."

All the myths that we grow up with about what happens good or bad when you wear your glasses contributes to the confusion about wearing glasses. Always consult with your eye doctor about glasses. If what your eye doctor tells you about glasses doesn't make sense to you, then ask questions. If your eye doctor won't answer your questions, then go find another doctor. That last piece of advice applies to any type of doctor or lawyer or plumber or accountant for that matter. Doctors are well trained to do the things they do but they are not gods. If you are not dealing with children who have developing eyes, then common sense will tell most people when to wear their glasses.

Probably the worse thing that can happen to an adult if they don't wear their glasses is headaches, eye strain and failure to perform their assigned tasks efficiently. Blindness will not result in adults who don't wear their glasses unless they are involved in an accident because they cannot see and suffer an injury to their eyes as a result. Also, wearing your glasses or not wearing your glasses will have no effect on any changes that occur to the prescription in the future.
As always, you should get regular eye exams to make sure you don't have disease.
