When Will the Next Blue Moon Happen (What Year?)

Nick Meyer
New Year's Eve revelers in the United States were treated to an awesome spectacle on the night of December 31, 2009 as a blue moon was sighted in the night's sky.

The phrase "it only happens once in a blue moon" is very popular and refers to something that doesn't happen very often at all, but the next blue moon will actually happen sooner than many people think.

The next blue moon won't happen next year or next New Year's eve, obviously, but it will happen within the next three years.

When is the Next Blue Moon (What Year?)

The next blue moon will be sighted in the night's sky in August of the year 2012. The average blue moon happens about every 2.5 years and the expected blue moon sighting in August 2012 will likely continue that pattern.

As many can see, the typical blue moon sighting on a normal day isn't quite as rare as the phrase makes it out to be, but a New Year's Even blue moon is definitely a rare occurence.

The last blue moon sighted in the sky on New Year's Eve before the 2009-2010 blue moon happened back in 1990.

The next New Year's Eve blue moon event on the horizon will likely happen in 2028 so go ahead and set your calendar because a New Year's Eve blue moon is a special occurrence that doesn't happen too often.
