When Will the World End and How?

Mark Mielke
It has been a question debated since man could first debate. It is our oldest, most pressing, and still unanswered question. When will the world end and how? Religion would point to their bibles and holy scriptures. Most say the world will end when their god decides it. But religion is so unreliable. Science has many other views on the world ending. Or at least the end of humanity. To get a firm understanding of this coming doomsday event, let us first look to others similar to it.

When I talk about the end of the world, I am talking about the end of OUR world. The end of humanity and humanity's legacy. The fall of civilization. You get my drift? All this has to warrant is the extinction of the human species. That event, I am sorry to say, is all too possible in this world. Take the dinosaurs. They consisted of thousands of species of the most advanced and dominant creatures on the planet. Yet one day, their entire race mysteriously died. We do not yet know how this happened, only that it did happen. The dinosaurs were around longer than us. They were far more developed and naturally suited for their environment. But they still died. But their untimely end was not the greatest. The worst mass extinction was a great climate change when the world itself changed vastly. This event wiped out 80 to 90 percent of all the species on Earth, even bacteria. That's right my friends. I said climate change. Sound familiar?

Let us first focus on the how part of the question. We can look at when later. How will humanity die out? Well, it appears that climate change is a possibility. Our world is slowly changing due to global warming. Much like the climate change of old, that nearly wiped out life itself. But we do have an advantage here. We have developed the technology to create artificial environments for ourselves and others. We might be able to hide from a climate change.

A meteor or comet strike might wipe out humanity. It is possible that this event killed the dinosaurs as well. How could a giant space rock possibly hurt us? Well, that depends on it's size and speed. The faster it is moving, the harder it will hit the planet. The bigger it is, the harder it will hit. If a big one were to land in the ocean, it would create massive tidal waves that would wipe out coastal cities and even a good deal inland as well. If it hit on land, the results would be much worse. It would be worse than any nuclear weapon we've developed. It would completely eradicate nearby cities and towns. The amount of dirt and dust kicked into the atmosphere would likely destroy a good deal of plant life, forcing us into starvation. Even if that doesn't happen, we could still die from other problems. Radiation released from the space rock would kill many, and the Earth could be plunged into a nuclear winter for years if we were unlucky enough.

Now let's talk about the when. Throughout history, many people have claimed to know the date of the end of the world. Do you recall the year 2000? I still remember it. There were a lot of scared people who thought the world was going to end then. But, obviously, it didn't. We got lucky that time. Will we be as lucky the next time? December, 2012. Science has predicted that a gravitational change will occur in the universe due to strange black hole activity. They do not yet know what this will mean for Earth. Oddly, this date is marked on the Mayan calender as the end of the world. What's the significance of this? The Mayan calender is almost never wrong. It even accurately predicted the fall of Mayan civilization. Coincidence? Possibly. But then we have to take Nostradamus into account. You've heard of him. He was the famous psychic who made a bunch of accurate predictions. He also predicted the end of the world in December of 2012. Him, and dozens of other small civilizations of the ancient world. Right now, 2012, like 2000 is set as the date of our extinction. Will we be lucky again?

Keep in mind that just because the world might end in 2012, that doesn't mean you have to just give up on life. If you quit your job and spend all your money by then, and the world doesn't end, then what will you do? Keep your hope up. We might still get lucky.
