When to Write Holiday Articles

Should You Publish Holiday Articles Early?

Marie Anne St. Jean

Timing can play a big role in article writing. People will be searching for holiday information well ahead of the event, but how early is too early to publish your holiday content?

I don't think there is such a thing.

If you're writing about holiday events, get the information out as soon as you have it available to you. You're likely to get the most exposure in the week prior to the event, but having it out there much earlier gives you a head start in getting your article or blog post indexed. Other writers may be looking for content to feature in their own article or blog, and having your content already searchable increases the possibility of it being featured elsewhere. Links from other sites not only give you more chances to be read, they can also give you a boost in search engine rankings.

If you write articles about crafts or decorating for the holidays, get them published several weeks to several months prior to the holiday. People search for decorating ideas and crafts well ahead of the holiday and need time to gather materials. Teachers are always looking for easy gift items that children can make, and many women like to knit, crochet or sew items for gift-giving, and will be looking for those articles months before Christmas since they take time to make.

As of this writing in mid-July, I'm already seeing hits on my crochet blog from people searching for Halloween costumes to crochet. Get started on the Halloween articles in July, then move on to Thanksgiving and Christmas immediately thereafter. Thanksgiving recipes and how-tos will be in demand early as plans are made for family dinners well in advance. Christmas crafts and decorations, gift ideas for specific groups of people, and homemade gift ideas all will start to pick up traffic the closer you get to Halloween. Once the holiday season starts after Labor Day, it snowballs until the first of the year, and by then you should already be publishing Valentine articles.

If you think of the perfect article to write and the holiday is right around the corner, publish it anyway. Even if you don't get mega-hits now, it'll be out there and ready for next year.

Thanks so much for the invaluable information! I am just getting started, so I was wondering what sort of timing would work best for this sort of article. I read other's postings where they said their seasonal articles would get more hits at certain times of the year, but I wasn't sure what they meant. Thanks again!
