Yom Kippur is the holiest day in the Jewish Calendar and set as a the tenth day of the first month in Leviticus 16:29-31

  1. And it shall be a statute for ever unto you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and shall do no manner of work, the home-born, or the stranger that sojourneth among you.

  2. For on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins shall ye be clean before the LORD.

  3. It is a sabbath of solemn rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; it is a statute for ever.

On Yom Kippur--starting approximately 20 minutes before sunset & going until nightfall the following day--observers do not eat, drink, wash, wear perfume/cologne, wear leather shoes, or have "martial relations." Of course, young children, pregnant and breastfeeding woman and those with health conditions that make fasting dangerous are not expected to participate in the fasting portion of the holiday.

This is a day to reflect on the state of your soul, make changes, and find forgiveness in the mercy of G-d's goodness.
