Where Are All the Geek Bachelors?

Available Women Want You.

LaRae Meadows
I have been unbelievably happy with my geek for eleven years. His geekiness is, in large part, why he sets my heart aflutter and has kept me happy for so long. Geeks like my mine are like white truffles. They hide in the deepest, darkest recesses, waiting to be uncovered, and after a shave, their delicious distinctive flavor is released. Like the elusive white truffle, finding them requires a significant work, skill and knowledge. So when given the opportunity, I tell my single friends to try to find a dice rolling, binary code reading, video gaming geek of their very own. Weeks later, when they return empty handed from their Quest for the Golden Geek, they always utter the same thing, "After traveling here and there, we could not find geeks anywhere."

Most women hunting for The Grail of Geeks don't even know where to begin their journey to locate this reclusive subspecies. This elite group of brainy romantic prospects usually work jobs that take advantage of their special subset of skills but often sequesters them away from the view of more socially adept. These Nerd-Migos' recreation is usually done in the isolation of their own home, furthering the gap between geek and girl.

When geeks finally come out of their garages, basements and caves it is to find more of their kind. They flock to movies that star their favorite comic book characters, to each other's homes to play role playing games, to parks to live-action roll-play, and conferences to connect with other Trekies. These Meccas of Nerdiness are a subcultural phenomenon only known to average folks through documentary movies and jokes.

The geek-deprived would not even know what things to Google in search of a Ring of Geekitude. The average woman knows nothing of Comic-Con or DunDra-Con. Most people could not find their local comic book store without assistance. I don't think anyone could get expect a woman to get dressed up and knock on all the neighborhood garage doors on the one in a million chance of finding a D&D game in progress.

A motivated geek-fisher might go out of way to find a geek gathering but it takes a great deal of bravery and moxie for a girl to actually enter a geekfest. It can be like entering another world, often with its own language, lingo and dress. The rules for interaction are often very different. She probably would be the only or one of the only women at the festivities. Contrary to most other situations, interested men probably would not approach.

The shyness of geeks is one of their most endearing qualities but one of the most challenging to overcome. They are as cute and shy as mice (without the disease). It has been my experience that like mice though, they often react to an approaching woman with a frightened scurry or terrified freeze.

As your greatest advocate geeks, please let me know where you are so I can send available women your way. My herd of geek-seeking misses want you, but they have to find you first. We want you geeks. Come out of your homes, wear your expression t-shirts, be yourself and show off your geekiness. Once you hit it off, you can give her the grand tour of your fortress of solitude.

I laughed in recognition the whole way through, LaRae! I married my sweet geek 33 yrs ago. And we've reared a son in his father's image. My insight says you're right on the money about the movies and comic book stores. Our son does the SF Cons and met his lady through the Society for Creative Anachronism. Every FRI, his role-playing group gathered at our house, and I grew in awe of their quick imaginative minds and theatrics! For my spouse, a physics PhD, the university library and any used book store provides sanctuary. And how did I meet my dream geek? In a bar! Bravely venturing outside his comfort zone on the advice of an outgoing friend, he came to a bar where a friend of mine was working on her birthday. To be fair, he and I had known each other since grade school, but due to his introverted nature, we never spoke. Feeling festive & drunk, I lured him to dance (unaware he never had) Smitten w/my verve, he wooed me w/his music and enormous brain & 8 mos later, we wed!

I'm also married to a geek (of the Star Wars and role-playing video games variety), and thank God! Great article :)

Teenagers looking for a geek can find them at an Academic Decathlon meet. That's where I got mine~
