Where is the American Pride?

A Poem

Lucky M Diaz
Where is the American Pride?

Is it printed on the label of a pair of
pre-washed jeans that always seem to fade
after washing with "color-guard" detergent?
Or, blended into the tread of the most
comfortable hiking boots
then eaten away by oil slicks in parking lots?
Maybe, it's been woven into the welcome mat
beneath the door
and never brought inside for the storm?
Perhaps, it's been painted on a wall in a cheap hotel
room that's facing the street,
then covered over by a second coating?
Could it be at a phone booth faded by sand and salty air,
overlooking the California coast?

Where ever it is, it's not in the broken hearts of the Americans
who have lost their confidence in the American Dream:
Life, Liberty, Justice, and the pursuit of Happiness.

Sadly, pride is too often replaced with greed.

I think people's patriotism usually only goes as far as their wallet amongst some folks.

I'm not American and not really into nationalism , but I do understand how you feel here. After the Iraq fiasco and the way Blair lied to us over all kinds of details I feel ashamed to be British. For me its not so much about pride in one's country but more about wanting to be part of your society because its decent humane and honest and has integrity. Right now, I don't really want to be a part of it all - and we have no Barack here to inject some kind of hope. Actually, Blair did that in 1997 when we were all suffering under Thatcher, and look how he turned out. I'm beginning to wonder if there's another way we can go other than these corrupt political systems. Anyway, your poem has found a resonance with how I feel, so that's good!
