Where to Get the Best Street Food: New Orleans

A Short Guide to Eating in New Orleans

Jennifer Bove
New Orleans is completely different from my city of Philadelphia. Here in Philadelphia, everywhere you turn there is another food stand or vendor. New Orleans have stands and vendors, just pretty few and far between. The lifestyle there is very different and it reflects in their food.

Food Stands in New Orleans- The Que Crawl cannot be missed. It stands out because it is a large purple truck! This vendor has been recognized and mentioned in such publications as USA TODAY and FOOD&WINE. The Que Crawl has gained so much attention because of the fantastic barbecue Ribs and Cajun sides. It is also very convenient for the nightlife because it is open when everyone is finishing up at their various nighttime activities. It is located right outside a popular music/night club named Tipitina's. Nathaniel Zimet is the owner of this great "purple truck". An exact address is hard to come by, but the closest I found was: "on the corner of Tchoupitoulas Street and Napoleon Avenue"-USA TODAY There is a phone listed, and that is: 504-232-9344

Food Carts in New Orleans- Roman Candy is one true food cart in New Orleans. It does not carry spicy sides and filling meals though. Their specialty is candy. The business has been family owned from the beginning by the Cortese family. The Roman candy cart is truly unique. Back in 1915, they designed a cart that would be pulled by a mule so that they could get around and sell more candy. That design is still in place today. Since this is a moving cart, there is no address for it, but can be found popping up all over New Orleans. The address and phone for the business though is as follows:
5510 Constance Street
New Orleans, LA, 70115
504-897-3937

Fast Food in New Orleans- It appears not too much is "fast" in New Orleans and its food. There is a place called Pontchartrain Po-Boys that seems as close as you can get to "fast food" in New Orleans. The food is said to be out of this world. The typical food served is seafood, subs, roast beef and onion rings. The staff is pleasant and works hard to keep up with the fast pace of this fast food restaurant. It is also well-kept and clean. The address and phone are as follows:

4700 Highway 22
Mandeville, LA 70471-6754
(985) 792-0499

If you're coming from a fast-paced atmosphere, probably nothing will seem fast to you in New Orleans Street food. Have patience though, it is worth the wait.

I have to say I was not very impressed with the food in NO but that's because I really hate deep fried food and cajun food. The people, however, are awesome and so friendly.
