Where to Buy Cheap Antiques for Profit or Collecting

J. Motes
Here are some ideas on how to buy and where to buy cheap antiques. Whether a person is looking for cheap antiques to buy and sell for a profit, looking for vintage items for decorating or they are simply looking for a good deal on a collectible, there are many places to buy cheap antiques.

Become Familiar with the Market

One of the most important keys to buying cheap antiques is to know what is cheap. By gaining familiarity with the antique market as a whole and by learning as much as possible about specific areas of interest (glassware, books, toys, etc.), buyers can quickly know what is a good deal. Traveling to shops and sales with a general price guide in the car and a laptop (where internet access is available) is a good idea as this can allow a buyer to quickly double check values.

Online Sellers

While eBay and other internet retailers that list antiques are home to many shoppers that generally drive up the prices of antiques, poorly listed items often fall under the radar. Look for items that are misspelled, misidentified, or otherwise poorly described. Junk or mixed lots might also contain a gem or two that a buyer may be interested in buying.

Flea Markets

Flea markets are great for finding a variety of antiques, but prices will also vary greatly. Some flea market vendors will be more flexible than others, but typically vendors will accept less than the price listed on an item. Look for the amateur sellers at the flea market who are often more interested in moving items than holding out for every last dollar.

Yard / Garage / Rummage Sales

Yard sales and related sales are very hit or miss for finding antiques. However, these sales will often be home to great bargains when antiques are found. Hit these sales early before the best deals are gone. Rummage sales are often best as they combine the unwanted items from a large number of people.

Thrift Stores

Thrift stores are one of the best places to buy cheap antiques. While shopping thrift stores is very hit or miss for many antiques, if antiques are found for sale they will probably be very inexpensive. Thrift store inventory often changes quickly and visiting local thrift stores even a few times a week will result in seeing new merchandise.
