Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, how lovely are your branches! Its really that time of year again. The time of year when we start thinking about turkey, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, and Christmas trees. We decide what kind of tree we want and then where we will go to buy it. Do I want a real tree thats been fresh cut, and drilled for a stand, or do I want an artificial Christmas tree that I just pull out of a box and put up. There are so many choices these days. Do I want to buy locally from a Christmas tree farm or buy an artificial tree or a cut tree that's been imported from somewhere else and has been sitting for a while. My choice is always fresh cut, so I will give my choice for the best places in Southern Indiana to get fresh cut trees and the best places in Southern Indiana to get artificial trees so you can find the perfect Christmas tree for your Holiday celebration.

Fresh Cut and Living Christmas Trees
For the last two years I have been going to Country Barn Antiques & Nursery for my fresh cut Christmas trees. They have four lots of Christmas trees to choose from, and four varieties of Christmas trees in sizes from 4' to 15' tall. There are fat trees and slim trees for those who have a lot of room and for those who don't. There are four varieties of Choose & Harvest trees:

1. White Pine..............................$4.50 per foot
2. Scotch Pine............................$4.50 per foot
3. Blue Spruce............................$8.00 per foot
4. Norway Spruce.......................$8.00 per foot

These prices include color enhance, needle drop preservative, baler and shaker, and drilling the tree for the stand. They also sell tree stands that can be used with drilled Christmas trees. They also sell Living trees which are best to have cut between 4' and 7' because they have a better chance of survival once they are replanted. There are three varieties of the Living Trees:

1. White Pine..............................$10.00 per foot
2. Blue Spruce............................$18.00 per foot
3. Norway Spruce.......................$15.00 per foot

The really nice thing about Country Barn is that you can come as early as September, pick out the Christmas tree you want and tag it. This ensures that the Christmas tree you choose is still there when you come back to get it. You can also call ahead and they will have the tree ready when you come back to pick it up, Country Barn also sells unique antique collectible Christmas items and fresh cut wreaths. Country Barn is a family owned and operated business and is located between Princeton, IN and Francisco, IN 1/4 mile N. of Hwy 64 East at Road 350 East in Gibson County. The hours are Tues-Sat from 10am-5pm and Sun. from 1pm-5pm.

Another place that I have bought fresh cut Christmas trees is Goebel Farms in Vanderburgh County. They have a large selection of trees and a range of sizes also. There are cut trees and dug trees that you can purchase with a 4' minimum size limit. They have two large patches of trees, the East patch and the West patch. They also sell fresh cut wreaths. The available Cut Trees are:

1. White Pine.............................$5.00 per foot
2. Scotch Pine...........................$5.00 per foot
3. Blue Spruce...........................$10.00 per foot
4. Norway Spruce......................$7.00 per foot

Those prices are for trees under 8 foot tall, trees over 8 foot are $1.00 cheaper per foot. This price includes baler and shaker as well. They also have Dug Trees:

1. White Pine.............................$12.00 per foot
2. Norway Spruce.......................$15.00 per foot
3. Blue Spruce...........................$18.00 per foot
4. Austrian Pine..........................$10.00 per foot

For Dug Trees they ask that you choose a tree next to a wide path so that the digging machine can get to the Christmas tree to be dug without damaging any of the other trees. They also sell imported Cut Frasier Firs which are placed in water as soon as they receive them to keep them fresh as long as possible. You may come out and tag the Christmas tree you want anytime after September 1st. Tags are on the desk in a plastic box along with ties. Find the Christmas tree you want and put the top half of the tag with your name on it on the tree and return the bottom half with name and phone number to the drawer in the desk marked bottom half. If you are tagging a tree that is to be dug write "dug" somewhere on the tag. You will need to call the day before to pick up your fresh cut tagged tree and a week before for a Dug tree. Artificial Trees
If I was going to buy an artificial Christmas tree there are a couple of places that I might buy my artificial Christmas tree from; WalMart and Lowe's. WalMart's Artificial Christmas Trees range in size from 32 inches to 15' and slim trees to fat trees. Prices range from $12.88 to $1,967, and and a variety of colors: red, purple, pink, silver, white, blue, gold, black and green. Many of the Artificial Christmas Trees are pre-lit with either clear lights or multicolored lights, and some of them even have shatterproof ornaments included. Wal Mart also has D&W Silks Christmas in a Box Woodland Collection Set that has a 7' pre-lit Christmas tree, a decorated wreath, a decorated garland, and two decorative topiaries for $227.99. Some are available in the store and some are available on line only. If you order on line you can have your order delivered site to store for free, so you can choose the WalMart closest to you to pick up your order.

Lowe's would be another great place to buy an Artificial Christmas tree. Like WalMart they have a variety of Christmas trees ranging from 24 inches to 7.5' tall and prices from $15.98 to $298. There are Christmas trees in pots, pre-lit Christmas trees with multicolored or clear lights, Christmas trees for the tabletop or the porch. They also have a Holiday Living Artificial Tree, Wreath, Garland, Topiary Christmas Combo Set for $198. You can also shop Lowe's on line and have your tree delivered to your home and you can choose the Lowe's closest to you in Southern Indiana.
