So, you have a Halloween costume and now you're prepping with make-up and accessories. Even though some of the more modern vampires (see Twilight's Cullen family) don't necessarily have fangs, you still want fangs for your vampire or werewolf costume. I mean, they're a staple of the mythos for a reason, and you don't want people asking you what you're supposed to be, right? So you're going to go for the fangs/fake teeth to make your gruesome look complete. You could spend a buck at a grocery store or the local Walmart and walk around holding hard plastic, extremely white fangs against your teeth until they make your gums bleed, or even try out the cheaper personalized rubber teeth that have to be cut to form. There's another option, however: you could perform a little Hollywood-style magic this Halloween and purchase fitted fangs. The good news? You'll get a great, realistic look using teeth that will last you several Halloween nights. The bad news? You're going to need more than a few dollars. But never fear, sales are here--you won't need to spend a fortune to look like a monster.
If you're going to purchase fake fangs, there are few things you need to consider. Do you have braces? If so, most fangs will not be able to fit, so, unfortunately, you'll have to wait until your braces are removed before you can wear fake fangs. Also, you need to allow time for shipping. While custom fangs can be purchased at most Halloween costume stores and even goth/gamer boutiques, the largest variety is always found online. To get the fangs you really want in time for Halloween, allow several weeks for shipping. Though quicker shipping is available, it costs more, so save money by planning ahead.
What to buy:
In the world of fake, affordable fangs, there are two main fang and fake teeth producers: Scarecrow Fangs and Dental Distortions. Both offer a surprisingly large variety of fangs that range from vampires to werewolves, from extremely long "Saber" canines to "Subtle" fangs, from personal molded fangs to quick fit veneers that go across front teeth.
Scarecrow Fangs offers sets of fangs that can be molded to fit your canines, as well as a few veneer options. Their most popular fangs are the custom individual "coffin" sets. These are easy to set and require around thirty minutes to mold. Using the powder and chemicals provided (an extra portion is provided, allowing for mishaps), customers make a putty and insert it into the fang. Then they fit the fang onto the selected tooth very quickly. Without touching the tooth, they allow the molding to set for the allotted time. The fangs pop out easily after they've finished molding and can be worn over and over again. However, if fangs do begin to become loose, molding putty refill sets are available online for a few dollars.
Scarecrow Fang's "Subtle" fangs are usually the cheapest from their selection, beginning at around $15. These fangs are excellent for women and people with smaller mouths, or simply those individuals who won't want fangs that feel "bulky" inside their mouths. For a flashier look, fangs in several metallic shades (gold, red, purple, etc.) are available, as well as blood tipped and glow-in-the-dark fangs. Even double fangs called Shredder's can be purchased for under $25 online.
For werewolves, upper and lower fang sets are available in two sizes for under $27. Scarecrow also has a variety of fake-rhinestone teeth, pirate teeth, and corpse teeth.
Dental Distortion's fangs come in a "veneer" like form that stretches across the front teeth to each canine. While no molding putty is used, these veneers come with fitting pellets that can be heated in warm water to become "taffy-like" and then put against teeth. Over a period of around twenty minutes, the fangs mold to fit against teeth, providing a secure grip.
While their fangs might not blend in as well with your actual teeth, Dental Distortion's selection is large and filled with a variety of undead looks that feature aged and diseased gums. If you want truly horrid, multi-fanged teeth to complete a demonic look, Dental Distortion is the way to go.
Teeth range from around $22 to $35 and, like the Scarecrow fangs, can be re-worn and re-fitted with spare pellets.
Where to buy:
As I mentioned, these fangs can be purchased in most costume and Halloween decoration stores, but for true variety, shop online.

Post a CommentExcellent information. :-)
I wondered about braces, very helpful!
One of my teenage twins used the pair of "fittable" fangs last year. They worked out quite well. Thanks for the info!
I've no idea what I am going to be yet, but I will keep this in mind if I need any fangs.
I have to say this is a very researched article. I never would have thought there was such a variety of fangs out there. Good job.
Who doesn't need fake fangs for Halloween? Great article!
The few times I've bought fake fangs they've been the dollar store variety. I'll have to keep these places in mind if I ever decide to dress up more convincingly!
