Where to Buy Murphy Bed Mechanisms and Plans

Save a Bundle by Building Your Own Wall Beds

Murphy beds are all the rage now, helping those on a budget make the most of the space they have, as decribed here . These compact beds fold up against the wall and can easily be hidden by sliding bookshelves or cabinet doors. Sometimes called wall beds, prices for this custom designed furniture can range from reasonable to ultra expensive.

Luckily, it is possible to find Murphy bed plans or mechanisms online or in retail stores, allowing you to make your own bed and save money.

Murphy Bed Mechanisms and Plans Can Save You a Bundle

If you purchase a wall bed which is already made, the average price is well over a thousand dollars. But if you buy a vertical mount Murphy bed hardware mechanism, you can pay as little as $299.00 at Rockler Hardware and other sources. Simply watch the video here to see how easy it is to put together a Rockler bed which uses their patented mechanisn - the part that either automatically raises the bed or makes it easy for a person to do so.

You'll need to specify whether you want a Murphy bed mechanism for a twin, full or queen bed but any of the three options cost the same price ($299). Even with the cost of lumber for the bed frame and cabinet enclosure, you can save well over half the price or a bed that is already built.

The Average Person can Follow the Plans to Build These Beds

Included are instructions for the wood needed to make the bed. Basic woodworking skills are needed but anyone who can handle basic home maintenance and occasional DIY projects should be able to understand the instructions to complete these beds. Basic woodworking skills help but directions and videos are easy to follow.

For an additional $12.99, you can purchase the plans for a bookcase made to surround the Murphy bed and which can accommodate lighting. You can even buy the lights themselves at Rockler Hardware for $34.99. Of course, you'll have to provide your own mattress but they can often be found on sale. Customer reviews for both the mechanisms and plans offered at Rockler are extremely positive.

Two More Stores Where You Can Buy Online Wall Bed Plans and Mechanisms

Another excellent source of Murphy bed mechanisms is at Murphy Beds Direct, found here and featured on CBS Sunday Morning. They sell an amazing variety of pre-built beds but also sell Murphy Bed mechanisms, as seen here, which come with a couple of options.

You can either buy the mechanism itself, with prices between $345 to $799 (depending on the size of mechanism needed) or you can purchase the Murphy bed with foundation. These beds have been featured on HGTV and Discovery Channel Design shows. Shipping costs will run an extra $25, still keeping these wall beds within bargain price ranges.

A third online store where you can buy a Murphy bed mechanism is Murphy Bed-Hardware, found here . They have their own specially patented mechanism, offered with Elite and Supreme Hardware, among other options. You can buy complete bed frame kits here so it costs more than buying the bed mechanism alone. However, the kits come with a lifetime warranty and a side tilt variation is available (if you want your bed to fold up horizontally instead of vertically). All of these sites are well worth checking out to build Murphy beds which don't cost thousands of dollars.

What an interesting topic! I think a murphy bed might be the perfect solution for a guest bedroom that can also double as something else (like a home office or sewing room).
