Where Did Kate Gosselin Go Wrong?

K. Giddings
She started out her married life with the hopes of children and happiness like many others. With the help of fertility treatments she had two beautiful twin girls with her husband Jon. Going back to fertility treatments for another child, she ended up pregnant with sextuplets. So before they were even 30 years old, Jon and Kate Gosselin had 8 children.

Most people can understand the lure of reality television. Especially if you are in a unique situation as the Gosselins were in. It offered them some extra cash and probably gave them both a sense of pride having their family featured on a TV show. What happened to the Gosselin family is something that no one could predict; a hit television show and a cash flow that they had never seen before. The other bonuses they received were offers for free things, free trips, free appliances and free clothes.

The problem with what the Gosselins did with their situation was they got lured into the fame and money. They stopped putting their family first. When you allow special lighting into your home for your TV show shoots, when you distance yourself from friends and family and when you disrespect your partner for the sake of ratings, you pretty much are doomed.

Kate Gosselin did not grow up with money. She grew up in a family that was Christian and was raised in a strict two-parent home. From interviews she has given she has obvious resentment of her family. She tried at the beginning of Jon and Kate Plus 8 to talk about her faith. But you can talk about your faith and you can live it out. Kate is only talk.

As her world started to unravel when she and her husband decided to divorce, she became more preoccupied on "the show" than her real life obligations. She used the excuse of needing to work. This is apparently all she had, the television show. If Kate has an agent or an image consultant they should be fired. Kate Gosselin for many people during the few good years of her show was a "mommy icon" of sorts. With her organic ways of eating, parenting lectures and her initially perceived "real" ways of doing her thing were all very appealing to her main audience of moms. "Mommy Icons" are big time money- makers with or without television shows. The options of supporting a family with all the options she would have had without a TV show are endless: book deals, cookbook deals, food network shows on her cooking, traveling to lecture on mom topics, running her own blog for moms, being an expert on raising multiples for news programs. The list is really infinite in possibilities. But Kate did not know how to do anything but the show, which once it switched to Kate Plus 8 was really hard to watch. Kate really showed herself as a train wreck of a mother, trying to do it all and have it all as a single mom. And the majority of mothers agree she is not a mommy role model.

The unfortunate part of this story of where Kate Gosselin went wrong is that there are eight little lives that have already been affected. Can the damage be undone? Only time will tell and only Kate can make that choice to make a change to start taking her "self" out of the picture and focus on her family.
