Where to Find the Best Long Island Bike Trails

Terry Hurley
Measuring 120 miles long, bordered on the north by the Long Island Sound and on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island offers numerous trails and excellent roads for cyclists of all levels. From the Queens border to the Montauk Light House, view spectacular scenery as you explore the bike trails of Long Island, New York.

Kismet to Atlantique for a Spectacular Ocean Ride
Bike Long Island's barrier island, known as Fire Island, from the island towns of Kismet to Atlantique. There is a hard surface path that connects these two villages but if you want to venture of the path, or explore other areas of the beach, mountain bikes are the best choice. Either take a ferry from Bayshore to Atlantique, or park in field number five of Robert Moses State Park and use the dirt path and beach to get to the village. The views of the ocean, dunes and beaches are truly spectacular.

Ride the Green Belt Trail for a Great Mountain Biking Experience
Mountain bikers love Long Island's Green Belt Trail. Running from Cold Spring Harbor, through Bethpage State Park and ending in Massapequa, this trail offers lots of exciting terrain. From the area south of Bethpage, the trail runs parallel to the Bethpage State Park bike path. The park also has biking trials with beautiful views that all riders will enjoy.

The Bike Trails of Camp Hero State Park
Located almost at the eastern tip of Long Island, Camp Hero State Park offers natural beauty at its best. Encompassing 415 acres that include freshwater wetlands, maritime forests, heavy wooded areas and pristine beachfront with spectacular rising bluffs. There are many biking trails throughout this park.

Stillwell Spaghetti Trail at Stillwell Woods County Park
Built on top of an ancient glacial ridge, this five mile grade-A bike path is ranked one of the best single track mountain bike paths in the East. Thanks to the glacial activity 10,000 years ago, the hilly wooded landscape leads to a great biking experience. A dense forest full of exciting twists and turns, gullies, hills and a rocky landscape all add up to a fun time. Stillwell Spaghetti is located off the Long Island Expressway at exit 44. From there take the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway to Jericho Turnpike, turn left on South Woods Road and watch for the entrance to the park.

Heckscher State Park
With over 20 miles of trails to enjoy, bicyclists have a great time as they explore this area of southern Long Island parklands. The south shore scenery is breath taking as you ride the area near the Great South Bay. Located in the East Islip/Great River area this park is easy to get to. Take Southern State Parkway to Heckscher State Parkway, and drive seven miles until the road ends at the park.

With dozens of State and Federal Parks, there are a vast number of biking trails within their boundaries. But don't limit your biking activities just to the island's spectacular parklands. Winding country roads, quaint eastern towns, miles of beaches and the best bike trials around Long Island offer uncountable opportunities for an enjoyable day of cycling.
