C. Jeanne Heida
After Christmas dinner usually follows Christmas dessert, whether it's scrumptious pies, spice cakes or even plum pudding. And, to serve up those gorgeous desserts, a collection of Christmas dessert plates will nicely complement those pretty-as-a-picture Christmas dessert creations.

What's fun about shopping around for a set of Christmas themed dessert plates is that there isn't any rule about having them matching the rest of your holiday dinnerware. Dessert plates are stand alone dishes, and can even be made of paper if that's what you'd prefer using. Paper Christmas plates definitely can work for the frugal minded, as long as they look like these quality paper plates from Pink frosting.com.

But, if your preference is for ceramic, stoneware, or porcelain Christmas dessert plates, these on-line merchants have some of the best designs of Christmas dessert plates available this season.

Target.com has several cute collections of Christmas snack plates or appetizer plates that would work well for desserts (and your budget). "All Spruced Up" is the first pattern that caught my eye because of it's elegant appearance. This 4 piece collection of cocktail plates have a red background with stylized Christmas trees. The 4 piece set is only $22.49.

For the retro hostess, Target's "Earthen" dessert plate is a pop-atomic snowflake in aqua and cream. This set of four 8-inch diameter plates cost $14.99. One other line of Target plates that the kids will certainly enjoy is the figural "North Pole" four piece set. These shaped dishes include a colorful Santa, Elf, Reindeer, and Christmas ornament and are priced at $22.49.

Countrystorecatalog.com offers a delightful set of 8" porcelain dessert plates that tell the story of the "12 days of Christmas" in a folksy style Each of the 12 plates in this collection feature a different illustration and at $29.99 for the set are a terrific bargain.

Williams-Sonoma.com has their own exclusive line of the "12 Days of Christmas" made of glazed earthenware. The illustrations was drawn by French artist Marc Lacaze and incorporate a French script. These plates measure 8.5" in diameter and are priced at $99.95.

Countrytradedays.com is the place to go if your Christmas decor has a bit of a western theme. Available just this year is the "Western Christmas Dessert Plate" created from Christmas cards that Til Goodan had painted for friends. These plates are absolutely amazing, and will be treasured for many years to come. The 7.5" desert plates come in sets of four and are priced at $98.65.
