Where Do I Find Content for My Niche Blog?

Casey M. Parthree
I've been blogging for over a year now and have enjoyed it tremendously. One question I get asked time and time again is "Where do you find ideas to write about?" There have been times when I have been at a loss for words and to facilitate my own blog entries, I developed a method which helps me to keep the blogging energy. I've built a framework of blog posts which helps inspire me with ideas. The method has worked for me and kept me blogging daily for the last year and a half. Here are some of the blog post themes I have used in building my own niche blog. I'll use the example of a niche golf blog to give you an idea of some specific examples:

1. Review A Product. For a golf blog, periodically write a product review about golf equipment. Search Amazon.com to find the newest golf gadget or even visit your local golf store to find out about the newest club on the market. Then write a review and include all the details about the club including your own opinion. Do you think you would buy it or use it and why or why not? Your readers want this type of information.

2. What's in The News? Another avenue I have used to find ideas for blog posts is recent news stories. What golf tournaments are going on currently and who is leading the match? Did anything interesting happen on the course? You could also watch a small portion of the tournament and provide some commentary.

3. Ask A Question and Get Reader Feedback. A great way to big blog rapport is to ask your readers for feedback. Again, using golf as a topic you could ask them their biggest pet peeve about the sport. Alternatively, ask if they have a favorite course they play.

4. Check The Social Sites - What Are People Talking About? Take a trip around the blogosphere by looking at the social sites and tagging communities. What are other folks blogging about and is anything a buzz topic? Choosing a hotly debated item will result in traffic to your blog. A recent hot topic in the golf world was whether or not Tiger Woods should have played in the U.S. Open while his wife was in the hospital getting ready to give birth to their daughter.

5. Start A Series. People enjoy reading a series and it will garner you some blog subscribers. It will also help you to focus your writing and can showcase your authority in a topic. For instance, your series could be aimed at beginning golfers while another series would be at those wanting to improve their handicap. Take some time to brainstorm several different topics and then keep them in an idea file for later use.

6. Rewrite Old Content With A New Twist. When your blog has been around a while, chances are you have a lot of old content that has not been visited recently. Utilize this content by rewriting old posts but include updated information.
