Where to Find Earth-Friendly Baby Gifts in Portland, Oregon

Kathleen McDade
Are you tired of the same old cutesy baby gifts from department and discount stores? There are many other options available, especially in Portland, Oregon. In Portland, you can find baby gifts that are earth-friendly, sustainably produced, fairly traded, or just plain funky and cool! Whether you're shopping for a baby shower gift, Christmas or holiday gift, or birthday gift for a baby, be sure to check out these stores.

Cloth Diapering and Babywearing

If you know a parent who uses cloth diapers, they will greatly appreciate a gift of diapers or related accessories, as cloth diapers can initially be expensive. Likewise with baby slings and carriers! In these stores, you can actually see and touch the products, rather than having to depend on online descriptions.

Mother Nature's Earth Friendly Baby Products

Mother Nature's, located near the Clinton Street Theater at SE 26th and Clinton, is the place to go in SE Portland for cloth diapering and baby-wearing products. Mother Nature's also has a selection of natural baby toys, including wooden puzzles and toys from HABA and Melissa and Doug, and organic and natural baby clothing from Under the Nile, Sckoon Organics, and Sage Creek Naturals. You will also find natural skin care and breastfeeding products. You can view Mother Nature's website at http://www.mothernaturesbabystore.com , or visit them in person at 2627 SE Clinton St.

Milagros Boutique

Baby Clothing

All About Kids

Buying used is another way to find earth-friendly baby gifts All About Kids is a consignment store specializing in used clothing, toys, books, and baby items. Some of the items are still new or nearly-new! All About Kids also stocks brand-new Melissa and Doug toys. They have two stores; one in Portland at 11905 NE Glisan Street, and one in Gresham at 130 N. Main Avenue.

Baby Wit

Baby Wit stocks sweatshop-free t-shirts from American Apparel as well as locally made clothing from Light and Gravity (all items are sewn and printed in Portland, Oregon). Baby Wit's clothing is different from the norm; you can buy baby clothing featuring politcal and pop culture icons (like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert) as well as in fun and funky prints. Baby Wit does not have a brick and mortar store; their items are only available online at http://www.babywit.com , although they are located in Portland, Oregon.

Gifts of Experience

Portland Parks and Recreation

A gift of experience is also an earth-friendly baby gift. Portland Parks and Recreation offers a variety of parent-child classes, even for small babies. Classes include baby sign language, art, dance, gymnastics, singing, and games. Gift certificates can be purchased from Portland Parks and Recreation at any PP & R community center or by calling (503) 823-PLAY.
