However, before you jump in with both feet you might want to do some evaluation as to why you want an exotic pet, or can you take care of this type of pet? You will want to check into any type of state requirements, restrictions or permits that may be required for this type of a pet. Is you home set up to handle the particular needs of this pet? Can you handle any special feeding requirements?
If you would be bringing this pet into a family situation would everybody feel comfortable with the pet being there? An example of this might be snakes. Not everyone can tolerate them, let alone inside the house. You might also give some thought as to will this have a direct effect on my next door neighbors?
One method for finding exotic pets is at the animal shelters. Currently more and more exotic pets are showing up at the shelters. You might as well look there and perhaps you can give one of them a good home. Give them a call on any given day and tell them what you're looking for. Who knows they might just have what you want.
Checking the Classifieds is easy enough to do. You may even find some good deals on exotic animals. You need to do your research about the laws and be aware of weather the sale of this animal is legal in your area, state or country.
You know what makes it easier, if you're unsure of what is legal or how to get registered to own an exotic pet. Check out the pet shops, they can be very helpful. Most of these shops can advise you on the registration and how to care for the animal. After all that's there business and they will want to guide you with any help you may need. If the shop is reputable they will not sell to you if it's not legal.
Maybe you're interested in contacting the breeders directly. Many exotic pet organizations can give you recommendations for reputable breeders that sell these types of pets. If you get involved with a breeder from another state, then again you will need to check weather it can be legally transported to your state.
You can certainly check online through searches for exotic pets. There are quite a few listed. A word of caution for you though. Many that sell on line are not in your state or even your country. If you buy online, don't expect to get personal one on one help with these pets. The one thing about buying locally is that you can go back to the shop where you purchased it if there are problems with the health of this pet or you need further information about feeding it properly.
