Where to Find Federal and State Tax Forms in Detroit

Mary Drew
Tax time is just around the corner and many of us are getting prepared for it already. Getting the proper income tax forms is really easy to do. You have several choices; you can get federal tax forms, state tax forms, city tax forms on the internet, by phone or locally. Here is a useful list of the most common and easily assessable places for Detroit residents.

Locally

Your local libraries and post offices will usually offer IRS tax forms along with instruction sheets or booklets for pick up. Involvement of your local libraries and post offices can changes each year so you should always call them ahead of time before you go there to make sure they have the forms available.IRS offices also have tax forms and instructions sheets or booklets available for pick up also. You can check on the internet or with your yellow page listings for a location near you.

Internet or By Phone

At the IRS website you can download and print current and past year tax instructions and forms. You can also get lots of resources to help you do you taxes. You can also order current and prior year forms, instructions and publications by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676) and have them mailed to you.

PC Or On-Line Software Programs

You can also file electronically on-line with e-file on the IRS web site or turbo tax to name a few and these sites will have all the proper forms and plenty of help that you may need. Another option is to buy software like turbo tax or tax cut for your home computer that comes with up to date yearly tax information, forms and instructions with a step by step process to help you do your taxes, most of these programs will allow you to file electronically also. These types of programs can be found in most large retail stores and vary in prices.

You can go to Michigan.gov for state taxes, you can get state tax instructions and corresponding forms at Michigan.gov/taxes. For city tax instruction and forms you can go to the city of Detroit site at ci.detroit.mi.us and get the required forms. Your local libraries and post offices should also carry state and city tax forms and instructions but again it is recommended that you call a head of time to make sure they are carrying the form you need before you make the drive. Both sites offer E-filing on their sites which has all the necessary forms and instructions.
