Where to Find Great and Affordable Sushi in New York City

Lauren Romano
Most people have tried sushi at some point in their lives. Sushi seems to be one of those foods that you can either take it or leave it. If you are one of those people that happens to like it, you do definitely have your choices of what kind to have. Sometimes sushi can be expensive, especially in New York City. Here are some affordable places to get sushi that don't scrimp on taste or quality.

Sushi is vinegar rice combined with egg, vegetables and/ or seafood. One of the most popular forms of sushi in America is called the California Roll. A California Roll is fish cake, avocado, cucumber and seaweed hidden inside a layer of rice. The spicy roll is also popular in America. The combination of shichimi (which is red pepper flakes), hot sauce and mayonnaise are mixed together with fish, usually chopped tuna or salmon.

If you are in New York City, you definitely have your selection of places to get sushi. How do you narrow it down on where to go? Here are some great places to try, whether you are a first timer or a veteran sushi eater.

Toyama Sushi Japanese Restaurant offers the option of eating in or having free delivery. They make a promise to deliver your food to you in 30 minutes or less. Located in Midtown, they have a convenient location and offer lunch specials. They offer 30 different types of regular rolls, everything from an Eel Cucumber Roll to a Spicy Salmon Roll and of course, the popular California Roll. The prices for the individual rolls range from $4 to $8. Most of the rolls however, are priced in the $4-$5 range, the most expensive being the Spicy Toro Roll at $8. They also offer 12 types of vegetarian rolls. Their menu offers a wide assortment of other foods also.

Jebon Noodle and Sushi House is an absolutely gorgeous restaurant. They also offer a wide array of food in addition to sushi. For the sushi rolls, they offer everything from a Volcano roll (tuna, avocado, cucumber, crab, masago, mayo w/ crunch and a sauce on top) to a spicy crab roll ( tuna, cucumber, avocado, masago w/ spicy crab on top). If you are a first timer, I would recommend the Beginning roll. The Beginning roll ($6.95) is crunchy on the outside and the inside is made up of cooked salmon, mayo cucumber and cooked onion. The prices are something that everyone can afford.

At Ko Sushi, the prices are a little more expensive than the previous two places mentioned, but not by much. The Chef's Special Rolls range from $5.95 to $13.95. The hand rolls range from $3.95 to $9.95. Vegetable rolls are also offered for $3.50 with the exception of the Special Vegetable Roll for $5.95. They have a few locations, so prices and hours may vary from place to place. I recommend checking the site for the place most convenient to you for their hours and prices.

In my opinion, start with the sushi first that has the cooked fish in it and then work your way over to the raw fish. Sushi has so many varieties, it's hard not to find something for everyone.
