With so many qualified people competing for a handful of job openings, the first impression a candidate makes with an employer is often the most important.

Employers want serious professionals, who will add value to the company, so dressing more conservatively and traditionally will set a standard that will show professionalism.

During today's tough economic times, most job seekers in Tacoma do not have the money to shop at Nordstrom for their interview attire, so the challenge is how to shop for suitable interview clothing on a tight budget.

Before venturing out, browse the selection at Nordstrom and Macy's at the Tacoma Mall to be able to identify quality and brand names.

Thrift, consignment, or resale stores

Tacoma has many thrift stores that carry "gently used" items, but when looking for upscale brands at these stores, pay attention to wear-and-tear, seams, zippers, buttons and stains. If the price seems reasonable, but there will be an expensive repair bill, then it may not be a great bargain.

Consider driving to Olympia--Washington's state capitol--to shop at the local Goodwill, Value Village or independent shops, where last year's quality fashions may have been donated by politicians who purchase new wardrobes each year.

One may also find high-end quality interview clothing at bargain prices by shopping the east side at the Bellevue Goodwill store.

Discount stores

By driving a few minutes from Tacoma to the Auburn Super Mall there are many great discount stores from which to choose suitable styles for an upcoming interview-Nordstrom Rack, Van Heusen Direct, and Burlington Coat Factory. (For a store directory, click here. )

In Tacoma and Lakewood, check out Ross Dress for Less, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls for designer names at lower prices on clothing and accessories

A final thought

Shopping frugally does not mean settling for poor quality, nor does looking like a professional need to be expensive.Look for timeless, conservative and quality clothing, shoes and accessories to present a confident, well-polished image that can win-over an employer.
