Where to Find IRS Tax Forms and Tax Help in Austin, Texas

The tax man cometh! If you prepare your IRS tax return by hand rather than using tax preparation software such as TurboTax, you can find the forms you need at many of Austin's public libraries. Since Austin boasts an IRS service center, Austinites can also get tax forms there. If you think you can get IRS forms at the Post Office, you are dating yourself, as the Post Office quit offering this service several years ago.

It may be more convenient for you to stop by your local library than to go to the IRS customer service center. Here are the libraries that carry basic forms that you can take with you:

Carver Branch 1161 Angelina St. 512-974-1010

Oak Springs Branch 3101 Oak Springs Dr. 512-926-4453

Southeast Branch 5803 Nuckols Crossing Rd. 512-462-1452

Pleasant Hill Branch 211 E. William Cannon Dr. 512-974-3940

Yarborough Branch 2200 Hancock Dr. 512-454-7208

The following libraries don't have forms you can take home, but carry sets of forms that you can copy for 20 cents a page.

North Village Branch 2505 Steck Ave. 512-974-9960

Old Quarry Branch 7051 Village Center Dr. 512-345-4435

Spicewood Springs Branch 8637 Spicewood Springs Rd. 512-974-3800

If you want the best of both, try these libraries, which offer basic forms you can take with you and other forms that you can copy.

Faulk Central Library 800 Guadalupe St. 512-974-7400

Milwood Branch 12500 Amherst Dr. 512-974-2355

Twin Oaks Branch 2301 S. Congress Ave. 512-442-4664

University Hills Branch 4721 Loyola Ln. 512-974-9940

Windsor Park Branch 5833 Westminster Dr 512-974-9840

All Austin public libraries offer Internet access to the IRS web site (www.irs.gov) where you can print forms.

If you have a more complicated tax situation, you may prefer to pick up forms at the Austin IRS customer service center at 825 E. Rundberg Ln., Austin, TX 78753. The center is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. and also offers assistance with tax questions. Call (512) 499-5127 for more information.

Sarah - I hear your frustration. You are probably correct that the article has not aged well and doesn't contain current information. I can assure you that in February 2010 when I accepted this article assignment, the information was correct; however, I am not allowed to edit these articles once they are published.

I remember when you could get tax forms at the post office, but those days are long gone. Here is a link to the dwindling number of Austin, Texas libraries where you can find some tax forms as of April 2012 - http://library.austintexas.gov/press-release/tax-forms-and-help-apl.

I agree that driving around Austin in search of forms is not ideal, but that was the article I was assigned to write for folks who don't use the Internet. It's much easier to download PDFs of tax forms directly from the IRS and print them at home - here is the link - http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/.

    Hope that helps.

The libaries do NOT have the forms that you can't print from the IRS web site. If your reading this, you can print the same ones that these libraries carry. Don't waste your time driving around. IRS forms printed in red, that they say you can't print for use ARE NOT AT THE LIBRARY. This article is useless!
