Where to Find Plus Size Halloween Costumes

Deborah Woehr
Halloween is just around the corner, and you may be thinking what costume you want to wear for the upcoming parties. You may have found a brick-and-mortar specialty shop in your neighborhood that supplies plus size Halloween costumes. Then again, you might have to turn to the Internet in order to find that perfect costume for a party that you plan to throw.

The best time to buy Halloween costumes is in September, when stores are offering sales and clearance discounts on last year's costumes. I found four stores that not only sell plus size Halloween costumes but costumes for children, pets and adults. Some of these stores also sell makeup, providing their customers with a one-stop-shopping experience for their Halloween getups.

PlusSize CostumeSupercenter.com

You will find a wide variety of plus size Halloween costumes at this website and in sizes small through triple large. Right now, they are offering a 10% discount on all of their costumes plus same-day shipping if you order before 3pm EST.

The Sexy Red Riding Hood Adult Plus Costume looks more cute than sexy. Its cape comes down to the hip. Although the dress's hem comes up to the mid-thigh, the bodice doesn't appear to show a lot of cleavage in the photograph of the model.

If you like the gothic vampire, this store has an Elite Gothic Vampira Adult Couple Costume that will turn many heads. The man's vampire costume is available in XX and XXX sizes. The women's dress is available up to XX, the XXX becoming available on 9/20/10.

Nightmare Before Christmas Sally Adult Plus Costume just arrived in time for the 2010 Halloween celebration. The costume includes the dress, gloves and a red wig. A costume for Jack Skellington is also available. His costume includes a jacket, ascot, and bow tie.

These are a few of the many costumes I found on this site. There is something for everyone, whether you're into super heroes, gothic, sexy, cute, or outrageously funny.

Purecostumes.com

Purecostumes offers children's, adults, and plus size Halloween costumes. They are having a September sale right now, plus offering free shipping if your order is over $60.00.

The first costume I looked at was the 50s Sweetheart Plus Costume. It appears to be a one-piece dress outfit that comes in black and pink or white and pink.

Next, I found The Brain Eater Kit. This costume contains a mask, gloves and brains. You'll have to find suitable clothes to get the full zombie effect. The other zombie costumes I found were very detailed, although their sizing chart is a bit weird. For instance, the Complete Zombie Adult Costume is available in "One Size", which is measured by a weight range. Women between 105 to 170 pounds can supposedly wear this costume.

A variety of witch costumes are available, ranging from the svelte to the more traditional.

Although the prices were cheaper than the PlusSize CostumeSupercenter, I felt that the clearance sections could have offered better discounts. Some of the costumes were discounted up to 50% off, but quite a few didn't offer much of a discount.

Halloweenmart

Halloweenmart offers some fantastic plus size Halloween costumes, at about the same price as PlusSize CostumeSupercenter. I loved the way they designed their site so that the categories are easier to navigate. Here are some costumes that I found.

The Devil's Desire and Devil's Temptress dresses are gorgeous, but will cost over $100. The policeman costume runs about $70.00.

My favorite section in this store is the Movies and Television. Freddy Krueger was the cheapest costume, priced at $37.00. However, I didn't like the mask because it didn't look like the Freddy I had seen in the movies.

Costume Kingdom

Costume Kingdom's prices are comparable with the other online Halloween costume stores I've visited. What sets them apart from the others is that customers get to review the costumes that they buy. This is a great help for other customers, who may not be sure about what they're getting for the price of the costume that they are looking to buy.

The Queen of Hearts costume was the most expensive one I saw on the front page, but I was drawn to the design. Looking at the picture, I see that is very detailed, and therefore would cost more than a simple witch costume. The one selling feature (for me) is that the costume is machine washable on the gentle cycle.

Conclusion

I have listed several good places to find plus size Halloween costumes. If you know of any more that weren't covered in this article, I would love to hear about your experiences with them.
