Where to Find a Replacement PS3 Power Cord

Accidents happen. You run over your PS3 power cord with a vacuum. The dog chews through it. You move to a new house or apartment and lose the cord in the process. No matter the reason, you now need a new one, but don't know where to find it. Here are some tips that can help in your search for a new PS3 power cord.

Know Your PS3 specifications

Before going out to look for a new cord, make sure you know what make and model PS3 you have. Knowing how large your hard drive is could be an important piece of information, but the most important thing to know is whether you have a "slim" or "fat" system. If you aren't sure what model your PS3 is, compare your system to pictures and descriptions online. Different styles often have different power cords, and one made specifically for the "slim" model won't work for the "fat."

Where to Buy a Replacement PS3 Power Cord

The only stores that carry replacement PS3 power cords are game specific retailers. Examples of these would include Gamestop, Game Crazy, and EB Games. Larger retailers, such as Target, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy, carry audio and video cables, but do not carry PS3 power cords in their stores.

If you can't find one at your local retailer, many online retailers carry PS3 power cords. Amazon.com, for example, carries a wide variety of different brands. It is especially important to read consumer reviews and comments to make sure the cord you're thinking about buying will work with the system you own. Although Amazon tries to alert users which cords work with the "slim" versus the "fat" models, reading reviews from satisfied and dissatisfied customers will often let you know which system the cord is compatible with.

If you can't find a replacement PS3 power cord at your local retailer and don't want to wait for the cord to ship from an online retailer, there are other options.

Alternative Replacement PS3 Power Cord Options

Depending on which model PS3 you have, there will be different alternative options for a replacement power cord. If you own a "fat" model, any three-pronged PC power cord will work to provide power to your video game system. You can find these cords at retailers such as Best Buy and Radioshack or anywhere that sells desktop computers.

If you own a "slim" PS3, make sure to find a two-pronged power cord instead of the three-pronged one used on the "fat" model. Many laptops and the original PS2 use this type of power cord, and they can be bought at most retailers that sell laptop computers as well as Radioshack.
