Depending on where you shop, the cut and price will vary, but, generally speaking, the trouser is a more dressed up version of the "flared" leg denim cut. So, if you're looking to bag the skinny leg look and want a denim pant that will also take you into evening with a more dressed up top, the trouser cut may be for you. Here is a list of stores that carry the style at a range of price points (ordered in ascending prices).
Sailor Jean - Victoria's Secret: This has a very clean look. The wide leg doesn't make people look like they're swimming in their pants, nor do they make you look sloppy. The pant has a mid-rise and is snug in the thigh area. The only downside is they are on clearance for $19.99, but only come in the 34-inch inseam, but this is good news for those who are tall. (Also try, the Sailor jean by Blue London Jean with the side button detail for $19.99, but, again, only for those who are tall.) Visit www.victoriassecret.com.
Truck Jeans Berlin Trouser - Alloy: Want a lot of color choices? Truck Jeans' Berlin Trouser has six different washes to choose from (from a very pale blue to the darkest ink rinse), plus four different inseams. Prices range from $39.50 to $44.50 depending on length and size ordered. The leg opening is 21 inches. There are slit pockets on the front and back. Visit www.alloy.com.
Blue London Jean - Victoria's Secret: The good thing about this pant is that it comes in different inseams (30-inch, 32-inch and 34-inch inseams) and can be ordered online. The jean has a flat front with slant side pockets and back patch pockets. It has a fairly wide leg, so it may not look as clean or slimming on someone with a more petite stature. The only problem is that it comes in one color, something called "indigo rinse." In other words, a basic blue jean rinse. The price is currently $39.50 on sale. Visit www.victoriassecret.com.
Truck Jeans High-Waist Stretch Jeans - Alloy: These pants are simple, but the detail is in the large scoop pockets on the front and wider leg (at 22 inches). The jean comes in a dark blue wash and is affordable at $39.50. (And there's spandex in them, which is always a plus.) Visit www.alloy.com.
Flare Trouser - New York & Company: A cool dark indigo rinse gives this jean a grown up look, but the tie front sash at the waist gives it some style. The denim is soft and light-weight and is roomy in the waist. These pants run for $49.95. Visit www.nyandcompany.com.
Battery Park Denim Trouser - New York & Company: This comes in a cool faded black wash with a wide waist and three-button tab closure. Welt pockets are in the back, and the pant sits slightly high on the waist. The price is $44.95. Visit www.nyandcompany.com.
Jordin Low-Rise Trouser Jean - Delias: The Jordin has a 20-inch leg opening and comes in a dark indigo rinse. It has flat front side pockets and two simple back pockets. Overall, it's a very simple jean with not a lot of detail and runs for $44.50. Inseams range from 28 inches all the way up to 36 inches. Visit www.delias.com.
1970 Flare Jeans - Levi's: If you're a no-fuss kind of person that always falls back on traditional brands, the Levi's 1970 Flare Jeans, may be the trouser jean you are looking for. This is a reissue of the company's Orange Tab jean from the 60s and 70s. It has a higher rise, slim fit and then a flared leg. Choose from the dark Rachel color, or the more antique wash of Daisy with the worn-in knee. The price is $49.50. www.levi.com.
Romy High-Waist Flare Jean - Delias: Want something a little more fun to kick around in with sneakers? Then try the Romy. These pants have a high waist and cool, front pocket detail (looks like two small pockets stacked on top of one another on each leg). The leg has a 22-inch opening and a 32-inch inseam. The price is $49.50. Visit www.delias.com.
Eva Fit and Flare Jean - Express: This is a slight off-shoot from the typical trouser, because this jean is a little tighter in the hip and thigh area and then flares out in the leg area to a trouser-style hem. This particular denim comes in a lighter blue for a more casual look and contrast stitching. Inseams are available for petite, regular and long. The price is $59.50. Visit www.express.com.
Denim Editor Pant - Express: Express' editor pant cut (sits low on the hips, straight through the thigh and flare leg), it's the perfect cut to get that sleek, pulled-together look with minimal work. I've been wearing this pant to work for a long time now. The great thing is that for outside of work, Express has the Editor cut in denim with a tab closure, back flap pockets and a flat front. Also great is the fact that there's some spandex in there for comfort. Inseams are available for petite, regular and long, and it comes in a nice, slightly dark blue. The price is $69.50. Visit www.express.com.
Randee Dojo Jean - 7 for All Mankind: Low on the hips with a wide leg, 7 for All Mankind's trouser jean has a trendier vibe with the greenish-blue tint and diagonal zip front pockets. Plus, they are very soft with a worn-in, antique look, but they are pricey at $225.00. www.7forallmankind.com.
