Where to Find Vintage Christmas Light Sets

Moira Riley
For many people Christmas is a time for the gathering of family and making of memories. As adults, many of us try to recreate some of our special Christmas memories by recreating some of our favorite parts of our Christmas past. One great way to do this is by decorating your home with vintage Christmas lights. Below is a brief guide to popular vintage Christmas lights and where they are available. If you are interested in a brief education on vintage Christmas lights and their development I would suggest visiting oldchristmaslights.com.

C-7/C-9 Vintage Light Strings

Probably what most people think of when they think of vintage Christmas lights are those large multi colored bulbs. These are the strings of lights where you can actually replace the few light bulbs that seem to burn out every year rather than having to replace the entire string. My parent's always had these lights and I think they are the best lights around. The most interesting retailer I found was Mister Nostalgia. At this website you will find a large array of different types of bulbs. I would recommend this site the most for someone who wants to find some really authentic looking vintage light sets. If you are looking for something that is mildly vintage looking or if you are looking to replace some of the C-7 or C-9 light bulbs you already have, then I would suggest a retailer like Christmas Lights Etc. With the rising popularity of LED lighting there are now sets of LED Christmas lights that can give that vintage feel. Check out a selection of vintage looking LED lights at Christmas Light Source.

Bubble Lights

Another popular set vintage Christmas light sets is the bubble lights. They are multi colored glass bulbs that are shaped like candles. Inside is an incandescent light bulb and fluid that fills the candle part of the light bulb. When the liquid is heated by the incandescent light it begins to bubble. From my personal experience you really do need to wait a little bit to allow these to heat up. I have never had an entire string of bubble lights, but we have replaced some of the big bulb Christmas lights with bubble light bulbs to add some variety. I found a nice selection of bubble lights at Betty's Christmas House and Christmas Lights Etc. If my description isn't enough to describe what bubble lights do there is a good graphic on Betty's Christmas House or you could check out this interesting segment I found on You Tube.

Vintage Novelty Light Sets

For a more personal vintage spark on your Christmas tree, a set of vintage novelty lights will do the trick. You can find so many different things from candy can bells to firefighter hats. If you are looking for something specific you might have to do some searching, but there are some sites that I found that carry some cute sets of these lights. I would recommend looking at the selection on the Christmas People website.
