Where to Get a Flu Immunization Shot in New York City

Free or Low Cost Flu Shot Locations

Mike C.
Every year from late October through March the dreadedflu circulates around the world. This highly contagious viral sickness spreads quickly through families, friends, schools, offices, etc. The New York City Health Department reports that the flu caused 3,000 deaths in the city alone in 2005. A good way to try and guard against the high fever, chills, cough, or worse, is to get a flu vaccine shot each year. So, just where can you get your free or low cost flu shot around New York City?

First off, the New York City Health Department offers free flu shots to ages 4 and above. If you cannot get a shot from your primary doctor, the Heath Department should be your next stop. Check out the New York City Health webpage for a detailed listing of locations that are open during the weekdays throughout the flu season. They will be offering shots from October through March 1, or until they run out. At one of these clinics, such as the Flatbush clinic, there is no cost to you for the flu shot and you do not need an appointment. You also do not need to show ID. Shots will be given regardless of immigration status.

Most Heath and Hospital Corporation facilities also offer free or low-cost flu shots. There are several flu shot locations in each borough so check NYC's Health website for all the listings. In Manhattan, the Lenox Avenue Public Clinic on 115 West 116th Street will be givingflu shots to people age 6 months and older but you must call for an appointment. They will be giving the shots weekdays from October 15 through March 1. The same goes for the Astoria Clinic in Queens.

Also, people over the age of 50 can get free flu shots at City senior centers. For instance, in the Bronx, the Aging in America Senior Center will give free senior flu shots on Wednesday, Oct 24th from 9:30 until 11:30am.

For a complete listing of all participating flu shot locations, please log onto NYC's Department of Health webpage. If you are serious about reducing your risk of getting the flu this season, you should get your free or low-cost flu shot from one of the above clinics or centers.
