New Yorkers also need not worry about missing out on the shot, or the clinics running out, since according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, there is a "good supply" of the flu vaccine this year.
Flu in New York City can be very serious. Influenza and pneumonia fall behind heart disease and cancer, as the third leading cause of death in New York City, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. This constitutes 3,000 New Yorkers annually.
While the department is recommending the influenza immunization for anyone who wants to reduce their risk of influenza, the they have also identified groups of New Yorkers that are considered to be at "high risk" of complications from influenza, including death.
These groups are as follows:
1. 50+ - Anyone older than age 50, especially those older than 65
2. Any New Yorker with a chronic medical condition
3. Health care workers
4. Children age 6 months to five years
5. Pregnant women
Whether you fall in any of these categories or not, contact your physician if you have any questions or concerns about whether or not you should get the flu immunization.
