The Influenza Virus is responsible for an estimated 36,000 deaths in the United States during the 2005-2006Flue season. The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and can even lead to death. This deadly virus is most commonly spread by causal contact with infected persons and touching also surfaces contaminated by someone with the Flu. Flu season is from October 1 - March 13.

Fulton County
The first line of defense in preventing infection is receiving a flu vaccination before becoming infected with the virus. "It is important that individuals with HIV, Diabetes or compromised immune systems receive the vaccine," said April Major's public Affairs Officer Senior. The Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness representative strongly encourages individuals who fall within the priority high-risk groups identified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to get their shot.

The groups include:
• Children ages 6 months and older
• Adults ages 50 and older
• Persons over 6 months old with certain chronic medical conditions
• Residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities
• Healthcare workers involved in direct patient care
• Caregivers, including daycare workers, and household contacts of children under age 5.
• Women who will be pregnant during the influenza season

Majors stated that this immune building shot is available for $25 at any Fulton County Health Center. In addition, the mobile health unit has been providing flu vaccines as part of an outreach service/program to Fulton County Senior Citizens Communities since October 1. All of Fulton County's 12 Health Center are offering Flu shots.

When considering whether or not to get a Flu shot it is important to remember that Flu shots do not cause the flu. In fact they may prevent a case of the flu, or make a case of the flu last a shorter period of time and be less severe per a Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness news release. The release also states that people who do not get an influenza vaccine are taking two significant risks - one, they are placing themselves at risk for influenza, including a potentially long and serious illness; and two, placing others, especially children ages 6 months and older, adults ages 50 and older and persons with chronic medical conditions at risk to develop serious complications.
