Where to Get a Free Turkey for Thanksgiving Dinner 2009

Karen Bishop
This year there are many families who need help because of job losses. Money is tight and you may be wondering if you'll be able to afford a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. My family has been fortunate enough to receive a free turkey and food for Thanksgiving when times were tight. I've compiled a list of places where you can get a free turkey, as well as canned goods and other food needed for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Organizations

Organizations such as the Salvation Army hand out free turkey for Thanksgiving. They usually give a box of canned goods, stuffing and other items to make a complete traditional Thanksgiving dinner. You can find the Salvation Army holiday events by clicking on your state at Salvation Army locations. School counselors are an overlooked source for help around the holidays. My daughter's counselor in middle school gave our name to the White Dove organization to receive a Thanksgiving dinner box and a free turkey.

Grocery Stores

Many local grocery stores have deals on turkey for Thanksgiving. Supermarkets will begin advertising ways to get a free turkey in late October or early November. The requirement will vary from store to store, so be sure to check your local grocery store circulars. Grocery stores may offer a free turkey when you buy certain products in a given time period or by earning points using the grocery store's discount card. They may also offer a discount on turkey for those who spend "x" amount of money on groceries within a set time period.

Food Pantries

Local food pantries give needy families a free Thanksgiving turkey. They may also include a box of food that includes everything you need to make Thanksgiving dinner. There may be requirements in order to qualify for some food pantries, while others help whoever comes in. Look in the phone book for the phone number of your local food pantries to find out when they will begin giving free turkey to families in need.

Local Churches

Churches in your town may have gift certificates to a local grocery store for a free turkey for Thanksgiving. A Catholic church in my area handed out a gift certificate for a free turkey and separate gift certificates for other items you need for your Thanksgiving dinner. Many churches have volunteers that serve a complete Thanksgiving dinner for needy families.

This is a list of the places where you can receive a free turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. They are there to help families have a holiday filled with food and memories.
