Durty Nelly's, one of the most famous restaurant/ pubs in Ireland, is located in Bunratty Village near the famous Bunratty Castle and it's only a 6 mile drive from Shannon Airport. Established in 1620; this building is abundant with history, music and laughter. You can read all about the fascinating legend behind Durty Nelly, at their website, www.durtynells.ie. I'm here to tell you about the amazing experience of the visit. First of all, the setting is amazing. I felt as if I'd been pulled straight into a scene in a movie.
A roaring fire and wooden tables are only half of the historic atmosphere. What makes Durty Nelly's the place to go in Ireland, are the people. It seemed to me as if some locals wandered in with their instruments on hand and just started playing. I imagine these people were hired to play, but it did not seem that way at all. Two men played traditional Irish folk music into the wee hours of the night amongst a crowd of locals and a few visitors, like me. They implored everyone to sing along and dance, and sing and dance we did! I felt as if I'd known these people for years; the locals were so warm and welcoming. That is what makes Durty Nelly's the number 1 place to visit in Ireland.
The Cliffs of Mohr in County Clare; while you're certain to run into many tourists, this is a sight you simply must see. It's difficult to describe the beauty. There's lush green grass, thousands of feet above the ocean, then suddenly the earth just stops and plummets down into a rich royal blue ocean. Go ahead and put on your fanny pack; who cares if you look like a tourist? You have got to see The Cliffs of Mohr.
The castles of Ireland are also amazing sights to see. I explored Blarney and Bunratty castles; and yes I kissed the Blarney Stone. I found the tours to be fascinating, and I'm sure a look around any of Ireland's other castles would prove to equally beguiling. Living in the United States, we rarely get to experience that sort of history. It's a romantic feeling of kings and queens, much suited for the mystery of Ireland.
You're trip to Ireland will be an amazing experience. The sights, the sounds, and the culture are enough to sweep any visitor off their feet. There seems to be only one proper way to leave you, with well wishes and an Old Irish Blessing...
"May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of His hand."
