The Best Grape Regions in New York State

Thomas West
If you are interested in the growing of grape for wine, then you will definitely want to visit the state of New York, which is home to several grape-growing areas. From west to east, there are several areas of New York where you can make a serious investment in the growing of grapes and the establishing of a winery of your own. This article will detail some of the most prominent wine-producing areas in New York.

Lake Erie and Chautauqua

According to Uncork New York, the majority of grapes grown in this region are Concord grapes that are used for grape juice; however, there are also several that are used for wine. There are seven wineries located in this area of the state. In fact, this Viticultural Area is the largest in the country (it encompasses over 20,000 acres), and is home to the company that owns Welch Foods. If you want to sample some of the finest grape juice, then be sure to make a stop to this region, which is located just off the New York State Thruway.

Finger Lakes Wine Country

Certainly one of the most prominent grape regions of New York is located in the Finger Lakes, which is home to approximately 90 wineries. In fact, according to Uncork New York, both Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake are home to their own officially designated viticultural areas. If you are looking for the best in various types of wine, then you have to visit this region. A visit to the Finger Lakes Wine website illustrates just how many things there are to do in this area, ranging from restaurants to museums (including the Corning Museum of Glass) to the numerous wonderful wineries located on the shores of the lakes.

Niagara Escarpment

This viticultural area is the newest one to be so designated by the federal government, and there are only four wineries located within the region itself (although there are several in the surrounding area). They have already organized their own wine trail, and it is quickly becoming recognized as a superb region in its own right. The wines produced here tend to be traditionally Native and French-American varietals, although some European varieties are also grown here. They are also well-known for their production of grape juice.

If you are interested either in visiting wineries and other vineyards or whether you want to start your own business, a great place to start would definitely be the Empire State itself. From wine grapes to grape juice, there is definitely something here for the grape lover in everyone.
