I don't know what it is these days with bands. "Maybe I'm the one who is a schizophrenic psycho." They all lack certain originality. Guitarists lack creativity. Mainstream "rock" music these days is almost pop music. The guitar playing for one is next to pathetic. What happened to guitar solos? Rarely will you ever see one in a current rock song. And I want to hear the strings being strummed and the pluck of the pick. Now guitarists use all these different electronic sounds and distortion. Some real rock distortion is great. But when it sounds like you're playing a keyboard rather than a guitar then it becomes unattractive to the ear. Guitarists like Peter Fampton and Tom Morrello are among the few guitarists who use a lot of electronic and distortion sounds that I like. And the lyrics in these new rock songs are horrible. There's nothing "deep" to the meaning. Take the song "Lips of an Angel" by Hinder for example. It's about a guy in a relationship with one girl but not over his ex. This is so original (being sarcastic of course). Now here is some lyrics from a great song by metallica "I can't remember anything, can't tell if this is true or dream. Deep down inside I feel to scream. This terrible silence stops me."
Rock music used to be a way to "stick it to the man". It used to be like an escape from reality. It was almost like exploding all your thoughts into a work of art. It was hard to even find one song you disliked on most classic rock albums. yNow it's hard to find one ou like on current rock albums. Has rock music succumb to "the man"?
I don't know. Maybe there's nothing left to write about. Maybe the past bands have stolen all the good ideas. Or a more probable reason is bands are too much in it for the money so they write songs that doesn't offend anyone or make any implications to drug use or that type thing. I love rock music, but whenever I'm driving down the road and I hear a new rock song come on, I have to turn the station. It's pathetic. Maybe that's why a lot of stations only play classic rock. Did the disappearance of "hippies" cause the death of good rock music? But you know what? All music in general is worthless these days. When will I be able to turn on the radio and hear a song that I haven't heard before that I like?

Post a CommentSlash (what is the name of his new group, slipped my mind) still does some guitar solos. Carlos Santana is great. Sharief in Burgundy did a cool guitar solo in some John Legend tune and has some rock worthy songs of his own, tho' he is considered "neo-soul", not rock, Hendrix's influence is evident. Me? I am more into smooth jazz, the quieter the better.
Um, were hippies still around circa Guns 'n Roses time? Or Nirvana? I did not like the way rock 'n roll changed with appearance of Led Zeppelin, Hendrix and others. Of course I'd rather watch a drum solo, piano or horns. Maybe it has all been done in so many ways already and new forms of rock can not be found. Or maybe as we get older, we can not appreciate new sounds because we compare them to what we liked "way back when". I do not know; seldom listen to the radio anymore. I catch some stuff on You Tube...
It's all been done in many ways.
Amen, Brother.
