Because a cell phone is portable, it's easily lost, and the first step to take in finding it is to call the lost cell phone. That might seem elementary, but people often forget it. A friend once lost a cell phone at airport security. Already flustered by the anxiety-producing process, it wasn't until after he'd placed the cell service on hold and walked back to the security checkpoint that it occurred to him it would have been simpler to call the lost cell phone and listen for its ringtone.
But ... where are likely places to look for a lost cell phone if it's turned to low volume or turned off? First, try to remember where it was last used ... in the house, in the car, or away from home, and then, use these suggestions to locate it.
In the House
Behind Furniture Cushions: Cell phones slip easily out of pant's pockets, so check behind and beneath all the furniture cushions. If the couch is a sleeper, look along the mattress, also. To save time, think about where you sat recently and try those places first.
In the Bed: Were you lying on the bed when the missing cell phone was last used? Check between the sheets, the covers, and the bedspread. It's very easy to get out of bed, set the phone down, and then make the bed without realizing the cell phone is in it. Also, look under the pillows.
In the Laundry Room: It sounds funny, but more than one person has located a missing cell phone by looking in the laundry room. The cell might be in pants or shirt pockets, or even accidentally sat in the laundry basket when you placed the clothes there while holding the cell phone in your hand.
In the Car
Beside and Under the Car Seat: The lost cell phone may have slipped out of a pocket or lap, and ended up wedged against the console or between the seat and the door. While checking in the car, be sure to check under the seat and also on the floor in the back, in case the missing cell phone slid there.
In the Trunk: Did you load groceries into or out of the trunk? It's a common move to absentmindedly set the cell phone down in the trunk in order to pick up bags of groceries. Be sure to search beside and under anything sitting in the trunk in order to locate a missing cell phone.
Away from Home
Recent Locations: Think back to possible locations where the missing cell phone might be located. At the workplace, a restaurant, the library, a grocery store, or a gas station are common places where cell phones are left behind. Rather than drive to each one, call from a land line to see if anyone has turned the missing cell phone in.
If All Else Fails: After checking the above locations, if the lost cell phone still can't be found, immediately call the service provider and ask them to put the service on hold or to deactivate it. This is a much better option than canceling the service, which may result in a fee for a broken contract. Most providers will happily deactivate an account, insuring that no calls may be made from the the lost cell phone. Once the missing cell phone is located, all that's needed is another call informing the company that the phone was found and the account can be reactivated.
