"Where is the Love" - My Top 10 YouTube Peace Videos

Alyce Rocco
You Tube is like having your own personal music television station on the Internet. People share videos of themselves singing their favorite songs at local Karoke bars, or create their own video set to music. When you join You Tube you can create your own playlists to watch your favorites over and over again. These are my favorite top 10 You Tube videos from my "Love" playlist, including a sampling of lyrics from the songs. Why title a "Peace" video playlist "Love"? Read on.

#10 John Lennon and the Yoko Ono Band ~ "Imagine"

The video in itself is not that outstanding, but no list of peace songs would be complete without it. I like the piano playing in his white room, and catch glimpses of a shy love between Yoko and John.

"imagine there's no countries~nothing to kill or die for~imagine all the people living life in peace~no need for greed and hunger~imagine all the people sharing all the world"

#9 The O'Jays ~ "Love Train"

This is not the best performance by the O'Jays especially if you have seen the group perform in person. I include it because it is a call for unity and love among people. Without love for one another there can never be peace.

"people all over the world join hands~please don't miss this train at the station~if you miss it I feel sorry for you"

#8 Israel Kamakawiwo'ole "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"

The Hawaiin singer left the world a better place with this song mix featuring Louis Armstong's "What A Wonderful World" and the infamous Judy Garland song. There are several You Tube videos featuring this recording that all evoke the same feeling of love, peace and joy. The one I choose for my You Tube peace videos is a photo collage of breathtaking rainbows, trees, a single red rose, lemon drops and of course children. It shows all that is right with the world and why peace upon earth is a good thing. Like "Imagine" it is a song for peace dreamers of the world.

"where the dreams you dream of really do come true~the colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky are also on the faces of the people passing by"

#7 Stevie Wonder ~ "Blowin' in the Wind"

Stevie Wonder is probably my top choice for all time greatest multi-talented musican and spokesperson for the people. Ever since his first television appearance as Little Stevie Wonder he has consistently put his heart and soul into his performances. Stevie recorded this song when he was 15 in 1966. The video is a 1993 live version from a 30 year tribute to Bob Dylan who wrote the lyrics. Stevie gives a little speech about the relevance of this song throughout the decades before singing, playing keyboards and his trademark harmonica. He offers this advice to people: "vote for that person that is going to commit to bringing unity to all the people".

"how many times must those cannon balls be fired, beore they are forever banned~how many times can a man just turn his head and pretend he just doesn't see"

#6 Peace Choir ~ "Give Peace A Chance"
Sean Ono Lennon updated his dad's song as a reaction to the short lived Gulf War in 1991. He brought together a diverse group of artists such as Tom Petty, Little Richard, MC Hammer, Flea, Lenny Kravitz, Cyndi Lauper, Al Jarreau, Bonnie Raitt, and LL Cool Jay.

"we don't want to drop the bomb~rock and rollers sing for peace~gotta sing it for the children"

#5 O'Jays ~"Put Your Hands Together"

The You Tube video featuring this song is from a 1973 Soul Train line dance. The talented dancers are energetic with contagious smiles and check out those clothing styles! We may have been a naive generation, but love was in our hearts.

"we got to put our forces together~pray for all the people that are sleeping in the streets~pray for all the people who don't have enough to eat~sing a song so loud, so sweet~ that the birds in the trees hum along~sweet harmony"

#4 Michael Jackson ~ "Man in the Mirror, Moonwalker Version"

Inserted through out the video are clips of Mother Teresa, Gandhi, MLK, Jr., JFK, Jr., under-nourished children, and fainting fans, to name a few. Michael's superb dance skills, energy and the emotion he puts into his singing inspires one to do as he asks at the songs end when he says; "make that change".

"I see the kids of the street without enough to eat~who am I to be blind pretending not to see their need~if you want to make the world a better place, take a look in the mirror and make that change"

#3 Bob Marley ~ "One Love"

Attitudes are contagious. The attitude in this video is happy, laughing, positive fun. Definitely an attitude worth catching.

"hear the children crying~let's get together and feel alright"

#2 USA for Africia ~ "We Are The World"

If I start telling you why I like this video I may never shut up. The only artist that seems more pre-occupied with the camera than the cause is, ironically, Michael Jackson who is credited with writing the song. The impressive and diverse group of singers showing "United Support of Artists" for Africa, is a shining example of how unity and caring, rather than war, can solve issues. I especially like Bruce Springsteen and Cyndi Lauper's show of emotion. Pairing Springsteen and Stevie Wonder towards the end of the video was a producers work of genius.

"we can go on pretending day by day that someone somewhere will soon make a change~the truth~love is all we need~there's a choice we're making~it's true we can make a better day~just you and me"

My number #1You Tube peace video is: Black Eyed Peas ~ "Where is the Love"

This video uses imagery to show what is wrong with society while singing about contemporary issues. It leaves us with hope for a better day with images of people looking towards the sky. Again, without love there can be no peace or "we can bomb the world to pieces, but we can not bomb the world to peace". Like myself, these "guys" are thinking of our children and the future.

"if you only have love for your own race~you only leave space to discriminate~to discriminate only generates hate~when you hate you're bound to get irate~people killing people dying~children hurt and you hear them crying~let your soul gravitate to the love~is the world insane~where's the love ya'all"

I have adored Michael Jackson as a perfomer ever since he came on the music scene with the Jackson 5. Like many superstars, I feel his personal life and demands of his career caused a mental breakdown or disorder. Some stars turn to alcohol and drugs to survive. I don't know him as a person, but could never discount his positive contributions to society in spite of his difficulties.
