Where is the Outrage? Katrina VS California Fires

Joshua Saldevar
In the media coverage of the Southern California Wildfires has been extensive even more extensively covered was the amazingly awesome response of the federal government to aid the victims of the fire. As I viewed the media coverage of the event I wondered "Where is the outrage?" My thoughts drifted back to Hurricane Katrina and the complete and total lack of response by the government. My personal outrage was further kindled when President Bush said that it would not be prudent to compare the two responses. Now I know most of you think I am probably going to play the race card but I assure you I am not. I do not believe that the disparaging difference in response has anything to do with the race of the victims. It has to do with the value of the property and the socio-economic status of the victims.

Ask yourself what is the profile of the bulk of the victims of the California Wildfires? Well the fires took place in southern California now the profile of southern California is a very affluent one. Large Mansions, Exotic Cars, Movies are filmed their regularly, nearly every large manor has a swimming pool and many other luxuries. This is basically common knowledge not to mention the fact that national and international stars of sport and screen held property in the effected areas. Thus we can conclude that the average income in the fire ravaged areas was relatively high. Now think about the Katrina victims most of them were pretty much your ordinary work a day stiffs living pay check to pay check with neither the social status nor the monetary funds to evacuate or push for immediate response. It just so happens that the bulk of those at this bottom rung of the income latter were African American but as I said its not about race its about fame and money.

I know there will be those that are naive enough to think that the reason the response to the fires was so much better then Katrina is just that the government learned its lesson. In my opinion this is a really stupid point of view because of one indisputable fact.

WE HAVE ALL SEEN THE FOOTAGE OF PRESIDENT BUSH BEING INFORMED AS TO THE DANGER OF HURRICANE KATRINA PRIOR TO IT HITTING THE GULF COAST. HE DID NOTHING... BUT IN THE CASE OF THE FIRES THERE WAS NO WAY OF KNOWING IN ADVANCE THAT THE FIRES WOULD BE AS EXTREME AS THEY WERE AND YET ALMOST IMMEDIATELY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WAS WELL ON ITS WAY TO RESPOND. Taking the fact that a surprise event like the fires was handled better then a pre-warned event like Katrina can you still believe that this is only because we learned our lesson especially when you take into account the socio-economic status of the victims of the event?

Well...since the levees are still unstable in NO, we'll surely see how the next disaster there is handled.

Surprised or not, do you really think that after what happened with Katrina Bush wouldn't respond immediately? Even he isn't that stupid!

I think that it is perfectly logical to say that the response to the wildfires showed that people had learned from the Katrina tragedy. Were there some things that were probably put into place because it was in SoCal? Sure, I doubt that the people planning disaster management in most states would consider having professional massages available to the refugees, but hey if they got people to do it, why not?! As for being prepared, wildfires are an annual occurence in that area so they are always working on ways to improve response time, evacuations, etc... Yes, the fires were more severe than they were expecting, but that is exactly why they had been preparing. One day it was bound to happen exactly like it did.

Actually, the number of ways this article disgusts me would fill 500 of my own on my own CP page - the idea that we need to be outraged at the government because we blindly, blithely choose to overlook the facts in favor of our prejudices is sick, disheartening, and irresponsible.

Actually no - both parties explained exactly what it was. Louisiana state government was absolutely abhorrent and refused Federal help and tried to make enemies of the government, and the California state government assisted in every step of the way. Of course, the voters of Louisiana knew this too - and that's why Jindal is our new governor. But go ahead, keep making uninformed statements like in this article, because, after all, it's much easier to say "omfgz it's class and race" instead of realizing that Louisiana just had crappy leadership.
