Wondering where to pick pumpkins in the Denver area this Fall? There is plenty of pumpkin picking fun to be had at Colorado pumpkin farms, which also feature exciting activities such as corn mazes, petting zoos and pony rides. Below are five of the best pumpkin patches in the Denver area.

Crazed Corn Field Maze and Colorado Pumpkin Patch

Located approximately 12 miles northeast of central Denver, the Colorado Pumpkin Patch in Thornton is open for pumpkin picking during September and October. The pumpkin patch is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10:00 am to sundown. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for kids-- kids under 5 get in for free! Group rates are available for 10 or more people if reservations are made at least 48 hours in advance. Aside from the pumpkin patch, this pumpkin farm also has a 20 acre corn field maze, a petting zoo, pony rides and a jumping castles.

May Farms has a pumpkin patch 44 miles each of Denver during the month of October, weekends only from 10:00am to sundown. The pumpkin patch is part of the Harvest Festival, which also includes a grass maze, a car show and concessions. Parents can lounge in a climate controlled bar with a flat screen TV while kids explore the maze. Kids under 4 get into the pumpkin patch and Harvest Festival free, kids under 12 pay $10 for admission and adults are $12. Discounts are available for seniors and military personnel.

Near the end of October, May Farms hosts a unique event: a pumpkin launching contest. This is a free event (though it may take a few bucks to build a quality launcher), and you can create teams of up to five people. All pumpkin launching team members must be at least 21.

Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield

For one weekend in October, the Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield opens up for pumpkin picking. They have a 8.5 acre pumpkin patch with thousands of pumpkins, as well as farm animals, vendors and other children's activities. Bring your own wagon to carry your chosen pumpkin. This pumpkin patch is nearby a corn field, so make a day trip out of it and enjoy all the autumn festivities.

Check with the Denver Botanic Gardens for the current dates of this pumpkin patch in Littleton, just 20 miles from central Denver. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children, but children under 12 who come to the pumpkin patch in costume get in for free.

Rocky Mountain Pumpkin Ranch

The Rocky Mountain Pumpkin Ranch, which is about 40 miles north of central Denver, opens in July and stays open daily from 9 to 6 through the end of October. While they normally have educational pumpkin farm tours and other activities, weekends in October are when you want to head out there if you're interested in picking pumpkins. Choose your own pumpkin, pose for cute photos under their pumpkin tree, and participate in pumpkin painting! Rocky Mountain Pumpkin Ranch also has pony rides, airplane ride, a hay maze, petting zoo, a chance to make your own cider and lots more. Admission is $6.

The pumpkin patch at Rock Creek Farms is extra special, because you actually get to pick your pumpkin straight off the vine! Pruning shears are provided so you can clip your pumpkin and take it home. Pumpkin prices range from $7 to $20, and they also have smaller pumpkins that are great for pies or painting. Be sure to bring cash or check, because this pumpkin patch in Broomfield is not set up to take credit cards. After picking pumpkins, enjoy the corn maze, the farm animals, the baked goods and caramel apples! Rock Creek Farms opens in late September and is open daily from 9-6 through the end of October.
