There's nothing more joyful than celebrating the holiday seasons with a live tree, but once the tinsel is down and the presents are packed away, a live tree can quickly become a problem. Worse, many garbage disposal companies will not accept Christmas trees.

But if you live in the city of Atlanta, or in Metro Atlanta areas such as Decatur, Marietta, Alpharetta, Roswell, Sandy Springs, or Dunwoody, you have plenty of options for Christmas tree recycling:

The City of Atlanta's "Bring One to the Chipper" Program

Turn in a tree and get a tree! Each year the City of Atlanta, and sponsors including Home Depot and WXIA, holds a day-long Christmas tree recycling program where citizens can drop trees off at various Atlanta locations. While supplies last, recyclers will also receive a free dogwood tree seedling. Drop-off sites include:

Home Depot
650 Ponce de Leon Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30308
815 Sidney Marcus Boulevard, Atlanta, GA 30324
3885 Jonesboro Road, SE, Atlanta, GA 30354
1032 Research Center Drive, Atlanta, GA 30331
2450 Cumberland Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30339

BJ's at Camp Creek Marketplace
3585 N. Commerce Dr., East Point, GA 30344

Three Other Locations
East Point Recycling Center, 1621 Normanberry Dr., Atlanta, GA 30344
537 Park Avenue SE, Atlanta, GA 30312
3540 Broad St., Atlanta, GA 30341

Recycled trees will either be chipped to make mulch or repurposed as a wildlife habitat. The resulting mulch will then be used for municipal greenspace projects.

Home Depot

Not only is the Atlanta-based home improvement retailer participating in the "Bring One to the Chipper" event, they are holding a Christmas tree recycling program of their own. Most locations will accept live Christmas trees for recycling between January 1st and January 10th, 2010.

Local Fire Stations

Some fire stations in the 9 Metro Atlanta Counties will also accept Christmas trees for recycling as early as December 26th, 2009. Contact your closest fire station before hauling your tree off, as recycle dates are subject to change each year.

To prepare your tree for recycling, be sure to remove all stands, decorations and tinsel.
