There are two places to rent bikes in killarney! The first is Sugans Hostel which rents bikes by the day or week if your staying there. The second place is the Flesk Caravan Park which is run by the same company so same deals and prices apply! However the draw back is no competition so prices are high! 16 Euro(24$) for adults for a day and 12 Euro(18$) for kids. Pricey! but still very enjoyable and necessary if your low on time for getting around to see everything!
What do I need to rent a bike?
This is very important!!! The guys that rent the bikes need to take a passport off you as insurance against the bike(they are expensive!) if you are jittery about such things you could give them your drivers license instead but be very careful about giving other people your passport you shouldn't just hand it out to anyone remember! They will return it when you bring back the bike.
Where to go:
Okay so you've got the bike, now what? Well the bike rental also comes with a free map of killarney so your set for sight seeing! The map list everything from Torc waterfall (worth the cycle up a hill!) to Muckross House and its surrounding grounds (free to enter with its beautyful scenary and a plenty of routes for for the budding cyclist!). Muckross house is the main attraction when on a bike! it has an entrance just opposite Flesk Caravan park so its easy to find. Theres a huge lake in there that you can cycle around (theres a coffe shop half way where they sell gorgeous scones and ice cream for the kids, its open all summer). Muckross house deffinately has enough for one hole day of cycling however entrance to the house itself is 8$ for adults, 4$ for kids, its a guided tour. The grounds are free and deffinately enough for most!
Is it safe?
Obviously you should know how to ride a bike before you rent one but there are other things to look out for such as: In Ireland they drive on the left hand-side of the road so be very careful if you have kids! Muckross house has paths through the woods you can cycle on so its very safe, however when you reach a road always inform your kids to wait untill you tell them its safe! There are plenty of big trees in Muckross House if it rains! Finally, have fun!
