Where Should You Retire? Chattanooga, Tennessee Tops the List

Abby Greenhill
When it comes time to retire, many people leave the northern states to move south. There are many reasons for the decision to live in the south including warmer weather, longer growing seasons for gardeners, more time on the lakes and rivers, a total change of scenery and because it's cheaper.

But why should you move to Chattanooga, Tennessee? In the latest issue of the bi-monthly magazine, "Where to Retire", they list the reasons to move to Chattanooga, Tennessee as: because it's green, it's clean and it's energetic. Chattanooga also actively recruits seniors. According to numbers form the American Chamber of Commerce Association, the cost of living in Tennessee is 10 percent lower than the rest of the country. People leave their high taxes behind them and head south where, in Tennessee in particular, the taxes are cheaper and we have no State Income Tax. Workers in Tennessee get to keep a little more of their money each payday.

But why choose Chattanooga in particular? The Tennessee Riverfront has been revitalized and there are so many things to do and see in "The Scenic City" and the neighboring areas. There are mountains to hike, rivers for white water rafting, lakes for boating and history to explore. You can do as much or as little as you wish when you retire to this wonderful spot.

Downtown Chattanooga offers fine dining, shows and concerts throughout the year. Hamilton Square Mall offers shoppers a variety of stores and the mall is adding a few more to the mix, along with a big remodel.

In 'normal' winters, you don't have to worry about much snow, ice or freezing temperatures. You can get rid of most of your cold weather clothing and sell the snow blower before moving to Chattanooga. If you get an inch of snow you can use a broom and be on your way!

The program manager for "Retire Tennessee", Ramay Winchester, realizes that the recession has slowed the retirees from packing up and moving south, but that they expect the influx to start up again. The "Retire Tennessee" folks have also stated that they rate Chattanooga as one the best of 11 cities that have retirement communities.

Chattanooga, located off of Interstate I-75, has easy access to Atlanta and points south, or Knoxville and points north. So if you are thinking of retiring 'south', maybe Chattanooga, Tennessee is as far south as you need to go!

I don't think I've ever been to Chattanooga. I'd definitely like to move to an area that has milder winters, maybe even before I retire! :)
