Where to Get Sandbags in Palo Alto for Flood Control

The news reports are uncertain what kind of winter the bay area will experience this year. There is talk that we might have an unseasonably dry winter, or a potential deluge of rain. It has to do with the unique location of our area as it sits on the border of two systems--one to the north and one to the south. While it is easier to enjoy a dry winter, being caught off guard in a potential wet winter where our local creeks and roads may flood can be hazardous. Anyone who was caught off guard this last January knows how quickly water can rise.

There are many things we can do to prepare our homes and yards, but sometimes the effects of rain are out of our control. In this case there is always the potential for flooding. If this happens it is important to know where to get sandbags in Palo Alto during heavy rains. There are two locations:

Santa Clara County Water District site is at 1925 Embarcadero Rd., adjacent to the Palo Alto Air Terminal.

City of Palo Alto site is at Mitchell Park, 600 E. Meadow Dr. (Parking lot behind the Little League field).

"Residents are advised that sandbags are most effective when used to prevent flooding from one foot or less of water from entering a home or business through doorways and garage door openings; and are cautioned to take only 20 to 30 bags per vehicle," according to the Santa Clara County Water District. They also advise residents to bring a shovel to fill their bags. Bags and sand are provided.
