Where to Sell Your Cosmetics

Monica Bullock
According to a recent Duke University article, "Brief History of Beauty and Hygiene," in 2008 the American beauty industry earned more than $20 billion in sales. This amount is significantly higher if you include global sales. As you probably already suspect selling cosmetics is a lucrative business, if you can cut a break. Breaking into the market and knowing where to sell your cosmetics can be a bit of a challenge. Good results depend on the type of product you are selling and current market trends. Try moving your products in these different venues and earn a sizable profit for your small business.

Consignment

People often relate "consignment sales" with leftover prom dresses and retired couches. In today's economy more and more department stores are renting out small spaces and shelving to independent small business owners. Approach local department stores about their consignment programs. Discovering where to sell your cosmetics at a good price may be easier than you think.

Mall Kiosks

Sell your cosmetics at the local mall. Kiosk rentals range in sizes and prices. Avoid signing a long lease until you've had a chance to test the market. Many malls allow small business owners to sample the market for a month, with payment of course, before making a commitment. Mall managers want to see those kiosks full, not sitting empty.

Home Boutique

Make your home business a home boutique. Set one room aside for your home shop. For aesthetic purposes, choose a room that is handy to an exit. Besides giving you convenience and saving rental fees, you may qualify for significant tax breaks. Check with your city, county or parish to verify that your home is zoned for home business licensing.

Mini Shops

Lots of home businesses pool together to share rental fees and costs. Consider renting out a mini shop or booth. Don't rule out mini shops located at the flea market or trade shops.

Websites

Sign up for a free website on easy to use sites like Weebly.com. Offer your customers quick delivery and good descriptions of your products. For significant sales you'll have to "work" your website by directing traffic there through social media and other websites. Some sites like Amazon and Ebay allow their preferred sellers to sell cosmetics. Apply for special licensing with these companies to get needed permissions.
