Where to Sell Your Home, Attic, Garage and Closet Treasures?

Need Cash? Cash May Be Sitting Around Your Home

Claire Luna-Pinsker
In today's depressed economy many families are seeking ways to add cash to their strained household budgets. A way to obtain some extra cash may be right in front of your eyes, stored in your closets, basements, attics or garages. There may be cash items collecting dust on your shelves, items still tagged or boxed, or useless and unneeded gifts from past birthdays or holidays. You could have merchandise, collectables or other home items that others may see as golden treasures and will eagerly pay you cash to get their hands on them. It's time to get selling.

Having a garage or yard sale can be a way to get rid of unwanted household items, but there are also online sites where you can list your items for sale and wait for a buyer's response. It only takes a little creativity to entice buyers. You have to make your unwanted household items sound like treasures, stick out from other seller's similar listings and you may get that sale.

You also have to be aware that you have to list your item at a reasonable price. Overpriced items will be totally ignored with the buying competition. Realize if your items have been sitting around in your home for a year untouched or unused, it's better to receive cash by getting rid of them rather then store items back up in your attic. Exceptions to this may be antiques or paintings which should really be priced by a reliable expert before selling online.

There are two popular online selling and buying websites.

Craigslist is a popular website to use.

Their website link is http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites

At Craig's List you can locate your state and region, sign up for an account and list your items for free. The directions are fairly easy to follow. You list and price your item, upload a photo of the item, write a description being as creative as possible, and list it for fifteen days. Interested parties will notify you by email and the good thing is you list yourself as an anonymous. Warnings about payment and methods of delivery to the seller are offered too. You decide between the buyer and seller how you make the exchange. Having your item listed in your area offers both the seller and buyer a convenient choice of having the item picked up or delivered via person or mail. Craigslist advises you don't accept money orders, and be wary of checks, and hold no liability for fraud.

EBay is another popular online auction website where you can sell and buy items. The website link is www.eBay.com On their site you can list your items, list them for auction, a fixed price or even accept the best offer. EBay guides you in listing your item with links to various forums, the EBay store, and other links to assist you in best selling your items. EBay does have fees regarding listing, uploading photos and shipping, which you can read on the site prior to listing. You can also browse and view what your item may be going for with other sellers for free. When you make a sale you will also be required to securely pack and ship items. PayPal can be a secure method to utilize for payment for your items. As you place items for sale and follow through with delivery, you will be rated as a seller. You can set up a PayPal account via this website link. www.paypal.com

There are other online selling sites such as www.Amazon.com and you can always look online for other sites. Just be sure to do your homework before you sign up for an online selling site to avoid fraud.

Now is the time to scour through your house and try to make some cash selling online.

I think Craigslist and E-bay are the best two sites out there.

Great story, with all the necessary info to start selling! But I, like some of the other comments, usually donate unwanted items that are still usable.

Thanks for sharing, I think I will try, can always use extra cash, especially today.

Sometimes we don't recognize that we do have treasures stored right under our noses. And in these tough economic times your suggestions are so helpful. It is certain that you will get more your items if they are off the shelf. Great article.

And if you are lucky, some rich person (who's gotten richer thanks to their precious tax cuts being approved by Congress and Obama) will spot your used items and buy them. The middle class and poor are challenged even to afford cheap items.

I have used Craig's List occasionally. I mostly donate these days.

We end up donating our stuff to the Thrift stores that are non-profits. I was never good at selling my own stuff! cheers :)
