Where Seniors Can Volunteer to Help in Des Moines, Iowa

Easy to Find Needs

JUNEANN REED
There are many places where seniors can volunteer to help in Des Moines, Iowa. For many of us, we just need the push to get moving and follow through. One thing about volunteering - for any age - if you decide it isn't working for your own personality, simply go on and try something else. You will find your match.

Help The Veterans
In fact, just last night I was speaking with a gentleman who said that Veteran's Hospital was in dire need of people to just come and visit with those who have no one to come see them. They especially need men for the task. If volunteering to help Veteran's is something you feel would be enjoyable for you, contact Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines.

Volunteer At A Hospice
Volunteering for a hospice is not for everyone. However, they truly need kind and caring volunteers to help make comfortable those who are at life's end. Volunteers can also spend time with family members whose lives are also being overturned. Some of you may have received help from a hospice and understand the importance of making everyone feel as comfortable as possible. Maybe you feel this is something you are able to do at this time of your life.

There are several hospices in the Des Moines area. Perhaps you are already familiar with one or one is located more closely to you.

Volunteer In The Schools
The Des Moines area includes far too many for me to write about here. But volunteers impact each school in a variety of ways. I'm thinking, especially, of spending a certain amount of time volunteering in the school each week helping a child learn to read. You alone, with guidance and kindness, could make a great difference in the entire outcome of a child's life.

The school year is almost over this year, but summer schools are held throughout the community. Or you may wish to take up your volunteering work in the fall. Make a call to the school district of your choice and ask for the volunteer coordinator, or, whoever could direct you.

These are just three suggestions, but each I feel, is very worthwhile. But think about your interests. Maybe you'd rather help care for animals, facilitate classes on gardening - or just help someone garden, drive people to the doctor or help clean up lawns. Maybe you'd enjoy volunteering in a hospital setting as those can be very social along with helping others. Whether it's the Blood Center or Red Cross or 4-H or sports activities you can soon be active and following the guidelines that tell us to get out of our comfortable chairs and do something worthwhile. Volunteer opportunities are endless and the need continues to grow.

Volunteering allows us to have ample time for our own daily needs, activities, families and fun. In fact, some structured activities within our week often help us to actually get MORE done every day. At the same time we're learning new things, meeting new people, helping others, and keeping our minds and hands busy. You may see a direct outcome from your choice of volunteerism or you may just know that in someway you are being helpful.
