Where is My Shampoo?

Thoughts on Product Change

Scott Maas
Recently I had to change shampoos from one I have been using for over 10 years. I couldn't get around the fact that I had to do this. Why would the manufacturer change anything on this perfect shampoo? Did a manager come up with a new way the company can save money, pitch it, then sell the idea to the board of directors and get a promotion?

The words of my grandfather echo in my memory "If it's not broke don't fix it".

Every now and then we come across this conundrum of a favorite product disappearing. Why do some people get so upset at this? I like to think the old phrase "we are creatures of habit" sets the tone for the correct answer. Below I've listed the signs experienced in my latest favorite product disappearing off the face of the earth.

The first sign: The company in question, started putting out a label attachment on the old style shampoo bottle stating "our bottle is changing". Nope, I didn't believe it. Something else is changing. Are they buying their product from a different country or something? Are they watering it down to save money? What's really going on here?

The second sign: Old style bottles started disappearing from shelves. Hmmm, it's really happening, I should buy as much as possible so I'll never run out!

The third and final sign: Internet search turns up my favorite $3.99 bottle of shampoo on Amazon for $60.00. It's over. The product is officially dead. I have to conform to a new shampoo. Drats! The discipline of adaptability must persevere. Is someone really going to buy that last bottle of shampoo for $60.00?

Change is a funny thing. Sometimes it's the best thing in the world, and at other times it's a huge dilemma. Regardless of status, it happens to all of us.

Follow up: I changed shampoos and kept the same name brand. There's just some kind of fruit/ berry in it now. Life goes on.

Good hair products have been a huge dilemma all my life. The way you expressed the story of a hair product tragedy surely hits heart of my lifes story, all the way to the shocking end "so over priced that NO ONE will ever buy it!" I pay that price.

    Good job

You hit the nail on the head. Big Corporations ver the small consumer. They miss what product names are to the masses..
