Where to Shop for Cross Stitching Items Online

Heather Stottman
Looking for hard to find cross stitching items like Krenick blending thread, needle paint threads, Mill Hill Beads, or specialty colored Aida material? There are several on-line stores you can use when you can't find what you are looking for at Michaels, Joann's, or Hobby Lobby. My favorites are Needleworksplus.com, 1-2-3 Stitch.com and Ebay.com. Although, I have used Joann's online store and herrschners.com from time to time, but those sites are not as good.

Needleworksplus.com is my favorite online stitchery store. They carry a lot of hard to find items like patterns, DMC and Anchor threads, all kinds of Aida materials in all different colors, and lots of colors of Mill Hill beads. They also carry hand painted needlepoint canvases. Their prices are reasonable and comparative to the big chain stores. Their shipping is reasonably priced and posted on their website so that you can see how much shipping will cost you before you buy. Their shipping is also very quick. I do not find myself waiting around wondering where my threads are for my new project when I order from Needleworksplus. They also have very friendly customer service. They once sent me a refund when I overpaid without me having to ask! The only bad thing about Needleworksplus is that their ordering system is a little difficult to use, but once you get the hang of it, it is not so bad. They website is nicely laid out and easy to use.

When I cannot find what I am looking at Needleworksplus, then I turn to 1-2-3 Stitch.com. They carry some items that Needleworksplus doesn't. They carry more needlework kits, and they carry items like towels, coasters, mugs, key chains, hats, and, etc., to make all those unique craft gifts. Their prices are reasonable, although not as good as Needleworksplus and their shipping is also quick and reasonably priced. Their shipping is also posted on the website so you know what you are getting into before you decide to buy. Their website is also nicely laid out and easy to use.

On the rare occasion that I couldn't find what I was looking for on those two sites, I have turned to EBay to fill in the gaps. There are a lot of good needlework sellers on EBay that carry a variety of hard to find items. I have bought hard to find thread or bead colors as well as Linen and other material for stitch work. Just be careful of the shipping prices and the ratings of the sellers if you decide to buy off of EBay. The informed and careful shopper should have no problems utilizing this venue to fill in their supply gaps.

I have also bought items from Joann.com. Their shipping is a little higher and slower, but if you make three purchase orders over a certain amount then the shipping on the rest of you orders are free for a year. The good thing about Joann's is that their prices are very good and they often have a 40% off of one item promotion going, which can make some of those expensive kits you have your eye on more reasonably priced.

Herrschners.com is another site that has lots of cross stitching, knitting, punch needle and other craft items. Their prices can be quite high and they do not run coupon specials like Joann's. They do run weekly specials, but the inventory can run out quickly and sometimes the deals are not that good. Plus the shipping is very high. I only buy items here if they have something really unique that I just love that I can't get anywhere else.

All of these sites have good service. I have never gotten incomplete or damaged orders from any of these sites and I have ordered quite a few items over the years. So next time you are having trouble find needle work supplies check these places out. You will not be disappointed.
