I can understand why Mr. Obama would turn his back on Illinois, where he held a senate seat, where he held his victory party, where he called home for years, where he has friends (no wait, he took them to Washington with him). I can understand how Mr. Obama would want to distance himself from the corrupt politicians in this state (AND THEY ARE ALL CORRUPT IN SOME FORM OR FASHION). I can understand his feeling of shame, because I feel it too. We are not the 'Land of Lincoln'; we are the 'Land of Corrupt Politicians'.
Every community in Illinois is warning of job cuts. Teacher jobs are on the line; even whole schools are threatening to close. My only question is WHERE are these kids going to go? Instead of 20 to 25 kids in a classroom, there will be 30 to 35 or more. Children will be getting up at four a.m. in order to be bused 20 miles to a school by eight a.m. Forget about participating in any after school programs, kids. YOU WON'T BE GETTING HOME UNTIL SIX OR LATER IN THE EVENING. How well will these children learn with overcrowded classrooms? Yet, Mr. Obama is all about providing a better education for our children. JUST HOW DUMB DOES HE THINK THE GENERAL PUBLIC IS?
I have to say in Illinois, we have some pretty dumb people. We keep electing the same corrupt idiots back into office year after year. These guys cannot be persecuted for any wrongdoing, because those on the panel reviewing them are as corrupt as they are. Any wagers on Blago getting off scott-free?
Besides teachers being cut, so are police officers and fire fighters. All I have to say is make sure you have plenty of fire insurance on your home and you may want to invest in a home security system or a form of self-protection, if you get my meaning.
To top it all off, I read in the Wall Street Journal, Illinois has the largest pension-funding gap, with only 54% of the necessary contributions made to pay promised benefits to current and future retirees, the Pew report said. I worked for the state of Missouri for 13 years and will receive a pension when I retire. (Well, I'm supposed to receive one, but I'm not really counting on that $400+ a month. I learned a long time ago to seek other means to support my retirement.) I would hate to be an Illinois retiree right now and read that article. Illinois is not alone; many other states have not paid into their pension funds. Some will argue that state or federal employees get too much in pension funds now. Maybe so, BUT THAT IS NOT THE POINT. The point is there is no or very little funding to even pay out, because we have let the politicians mismanage what was there.
You can't blame Bush on this one (although some will). Where is the stimulus money for Illinois, Mr. Obama? When are you going to save or create jobs here? You know you are associated with our corrupt politicians, so quit trying to deny it by thinking Illinois don't exists. Man-up and give us some of that Obama money.

We may have met the enemy, but it sure wasn't us who piled on the trillions in additional debt for our children and grandchildren to pay for. If we had employees who performed their jobs so poorly, we'd fire them. These jokers need to be fired, too. I hope to see a HUGE turnover in Congress.
Hey, Obama is still trying to win the election!!! Close to all that "hot air" in Washington! Great Article and Information! The Constitution says if a government is out of control we can put them out and elect new ones and Yes there are good Honest People that can do the job! Thanks! :)They are also closing down a lot of rest areas in different states!!!
Well, my point is, that Illinois DID indeed get stimulus money. You article suggest that they got none. I do agree that safety personnel like firemen and policemen should NOT be cut, however.
Politicians make promises for a living... even the best intentioned of them can't live up to what they say to get elected.
Great article. It's bad all over, and I think it's time for the people to REVOLT.
That's a sore subject with me. Teachers especially should make much more money than they do. They work so hard, and put up with a lot of crap from the kids.
Great job, Agnes. My sister is very liberal, but she lives in Illionois and wouldn't vote for Obama because she saw how little he did there as a Senator. All he cared about nearly as soon as he was in office was to start campaigning for president.
The shortages and recession is, of course, everywhere. I am concerned that people expect there to be a quick fix (which is clearly not the case) and that Obama will catch the blame. A new Republican President will be no better an alchemist than the current President is. As Pogo said, "We have met the enemy - and he is us."
Probably the same place where all his broken promises go: lost in all that dishonest rhetoric he delivers while reading off his teleprompter during his speeches.
